"Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not?"

- Edgar Allen Poe

***

Without a raven there is no dove

Without hate there is no love

Without blindness there is no seek

Without silence there is no speak

Without bright there is no dim

Without her there would be no him

Without yellow there is no green

Without you there would be no me

***

With the lonely streets wandered I

I turned away with a sigh

I bit my lip and paused to watch

Within the darkness the demon sought

The shadows chitter and say,

"Look, my brethren, a human walks this way!"

However much they observe

The demon doesn't say a word

I envy the way he sees

Yet isn't heard unless he wants to be

I wish to be like him, silent

Hearing everything, not at all violent

Breathless, I stop and stare

To wait for him, I dare

He finally appears in front of me

The gestures he makes, the shadows heed

"Hello," he says, sounding worried

A black cat and black dog scurried

Behind him, they watch close

For my reply, my prose

I nod my head in greeting

My heartbeat quickens, I'm barely breathing

His silver eyes soften and he steps forward

He takes me away from the horrors
