Haunted By The Past

I went to the door. When I opened it I saw...
Director Fury standing with two men. Each man had two boxes in their hands. "Hello Captain." Fury said. "I hope you've been comfortable. May we come inside?" He asked "Sure. Come on in." I stated, confused of why he was here so late. "Sit down Captain." I sat down and then he did the same. "I know it's hard for you right now, you know, getting back in the world..." Right there I interrupted him. "I'm not getting back in the world Fury. I'm trapped in it. Being made to live in it." I said point blank. "What do you mean?"he asked "I mean I don't think I can be Captain America anymore. I can't get back in the world and act like nothing ever happened. Like I've been here my whole life!" I strongly stated. Maybe to strongly. "I know it's going to take time to get used to, but you can't just give up being Captain America! People need you!" He said I looked at him, then walked to the window, looked down at the street and saw people walking and driving cars. "It looks to me like you all did pretty well with out me." "I said "Everything is newer and better. That didn't happen because of me it happened because of Stark, and Peg- Agent Carter." Captain the United States wouldn't be here without you." He said. I looked down. "Here I have some stuff for you." Fury said. I looked over and he had the two men set the boxes on the table. "What are those for?" I asked "It's for you to help you catch up. In those two boxes there are recordings, and news reels. In the other two boxes are news papers, some old SSR files, and some SHIELD files." He said. I nodded. "You can have these as long as you need them just keep them in a safe place." "Thank you Director." Then he left. *********************************************************************************************************

The next day I got up and went to the boxes Fury left for me. I'm sure gave these to me, hoping that I'll join SHIELD, but I need to learn about what I missed. I opened the two boxes marked: Recordings and videos. Inside I saw some DVDs and put them into my computer. I watched a news reel of WWII it showed me in my Captain America suit fighting and saving. After awhile I had gone through ten news reels and interviews. I finally got to an interview that really caught my eye. It was...... of Peggy. I took out my compass with the picture of her inside. She looked a little older than she did in the picture and she had her hair done a little different but she was still just as beautiful. Her smile was genuine and she still had a happy spirit.

After watching the interview for a few minutes I realized that the interview was about me. The interviewer asked "So you were close to Captain Rogers. Is that true?" "Um,Yes." She said smiling then the smile became a little sad. "I knew him quite well, actually." Later in the interview they asked Peg about what she thought about me. She told them "He had the biggest heart! He was very kind, and gentle. He always felt like he needed to serve and when he couldn't, even if it was because he would get killed, he thought it wasn't fair to the other men." She giggled "He also treated me like a human being. And I appreciated it very much." She told the interviewer, then she looked down.

Later she talked about the winter when we were in Russia. When we fought through the German blockade and saved a lot of men. She gave me all the credit. She was so humble. Then she said the words that broke my heart. "He saved over a thousand men. Including the man that would become my husband as it turned out." I started to feel my eyes tear up. I could have been that to her. "Even after he died Steve was still changing my life." She said and smiled thoughtfully. Then the interview asked "I understand, that you were the last person to speak to with Captain Rogers before his plain went down." She started tearing up trying to hold back the tears she answered " Y-yes I-I... was." She nodded. And sadly smiled.

"Would you tell us what he said?" The interviewer said softly to Peggy. She started to cry. "Oh Peg." I said out loud and sighed. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that." Then she answered "He-" she paused trying to hold back her tears. "He said... He.. I'm sorry." She apologized for crying.

"It's alright Miss Carter. We know it's very emotional for you." The interviewer said. She nodded taken a deep breath. "He told me that he was going to have to crash the plain to save New York. I-I tried to talk him into waiting for Stark," she smiled a sad smile. "Although I new being as stubborn as he was I wouldn't be able to. And of course he told me no. That there wasn't enough time. Oh, dear God how I wanted to talk him out of it!.....He asked me if I was still there. I told him I was. I tried to talk to him as if he was just going away on a little trip. And that we'd see each other again soon. I did that to calm him down. We talked about how we would go dancing after the war was over. Then he told me he didn't know.... how to dance. That's when I heard static. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do... I-I lov....."

That's when she stopped and shook her head and the video stopped. I sat there forever just in disbelief. How could this have happened to me? I go over to the SSR/SHIELD files I see all the Howling Commandos all of their files reading in big read letters: DECEASED. I get to Howard's file: DECEASED. Then Bucky's file: KILLED IN ACTION. Finally I get to one that looks very different. This one does not have any thing written on it except for the word: RETIRED.
