Chapter Twelve: Top secret woman's business
The night Jayden dropped me off after the Premiar, I slept for fourteen hours. I woke up around noon with Toby curled up in the crook of my arm and I was buried so far under the blankets I had to crawl up the bed to find my way out.
When I went down stairs, Zoe had left me some lunch in the fridge, but the rest of the house was quiet. Toby whined to be let out onto the balcony and then I sat down to watch some TV. There was no way in hell I was going to collage that day.It was almost two O clock when the doorbell rang and I had to drag myself away from the TV to answer it. When I opened it, there was a girl standing there in a black hat and sunglasses, her dark hair pulled back in a loose pony tale.
"Hey Spencer." She said. If it hadn't been for her accent, I wouldn't have recognised her.
"Hey Maxine." I said, holding the door open with my hip, "what are you doing here?"
"The boys have gone to L.A for a meeting and a weekend away." She said, removing her sunglasses. "Jayden said I'd find you here when I rang him this morning. I was wondering if you'd like to hang out."
"Oh." I said, trying to hide my surprise. "Yeah, sure. Come in." I held the door open wider and she ducked in under my arm. "Sorry it's a bit of a mess." I said, suddenly feeling self conscious. "I didn't expect company." Maxine waved her hand dismissively.
"Trust me." She said, "you should see the state of my place now that I live with Jesse. Looks like a bombs hit it every time I come home from a signing." I shrugged and shut the door behind her.
"So you just came over to hang out? Not go galavanting across the city?" Maxine laughed and shook her head, pushing her sunglasses onto the top of her head.
"God no." She said, laughing softly. "I'm still half asleep from last night. Jesse woke me up at four this morning rummaging around the room trying to find his suitcase without the light on."
"Sounds interesting." I said. Maxine shrugged.
"Oh it wasn't really. It just involved me getting up and turning the light on and finding him in a heap on the floor with his shirt on inside out and half way into his jeans."
"Okay."'I said, laughing as I opened the door to the balcony and scooped Toby up in my arms before he could throw himself at Maxine's legs, "that was not an image I needed in my head."
"Yeah." Maxine said laughing and slapped a hand to her forhead. " Sorry, I tend not to have a filter when it comes to Jesse."
Maxine and I spent the day on the balcony, both of us exhausted from a wild night out and both of us not planning on moving unless we absolutely had to. I ordered take out and Maxine told me all about her journey through the X-Factor and I in turn told her what I was studying in collage and had to spin a quick story as to how I met Jayden because she caught me on the spot. It wasn't until late in the afternoon that her phone rang.
"Sorry." She said, glancing down at the screen flashing in her hand. "I have to take this." While she was gone, I realised my own phone was flashing constantly on the table beside my coffee cup. I picked it up and turned it on, scrolling through the messages before Maxine came back.
