Chapter Twenty Six: Because that's the safest place to hide

I never knew it was possible for hospital chairs to be so uncomfortable.

In the bare, empty hallway outside the surgery ward, I suppose anything would have been uncomfortable, not matter what I sat on. It had been three hours since my grandmother had gone into surgery and the sun had long ago turned the dark sky into the brightest blue. There had also been no moon last night which hadn't helped my mental state.

Before Nanna had gone in, she'd grabbed hold of my hand in the weakest grasp and pulled me down so she could whisper something in my ear.

"Go take care of yourself for a while baby girl." She'd said. "I am so proud of you and I want you to know that I love you very much. When I'm gone, I don't want you to stick around. Go out and chase your dreams. No one ever fullfills their dreams by sitting around and waiting for them to come. You have to go out and find them. Don't worry about me.

Easier said then done. I thought now. But as cheesy as it sounded, it was also true. I couldn't sit still. In the end, I stood up, fishing my phone out of my pocket and scrolled through my contacts until I found Prim's number. She picked up on the first ring.

"Hey Sugar!" She said, and I could hear the sound of Brad and Mrs Collins talking in the background.

"Prim where are you?" I asked.

"Er, at home." Said Prim. "Why? Where are you?"

"Minnasota Central Hospital." There was a silence on the other end of the line.

"MCH?" Prim asked. "You're at MCH?" The conversation in the background died down to nothing. She obviously had me on speaker."

"Can you just get down here?" I asked, running a tired shaking hand over my face. "I kinda need you right now."

"I'm on my way."

I met Prim in the hospital cafeteria. When I saw her, all the awful feelings of fear I'd had for the past two days vanished and I let out a squeal, leaping up from the table. I jumped into her arms, hugging her so tightly she let out a gasp.

"Okay Spence! Can't breath!" I pulled away from her, a huge smile on my face.

"I missed you!" I said. Prim grinned at me.

"Not as much as I missed you! This summer has been awful not having you around! Do you know how awkward it is to have to show up to a party without a date?" I laughed.

"Like you even go to parties!" Prim shrugged.

"That's beside the point. Anyway. What are you doing here?" And just like that, all stupidity vanished. My smile dropped from my face and I let out a sigh.
