Step One:

Put on something comfortable if you aren't already wearing something nice. (animal onesies, fuzzy socks, slippers, cozy hoodies, just something that will make you feel more comfortable) If it's hot wear something light and thin, if it's cold wear something thick and warm.

If you're hungry, eat something

If you're hungry, eat something. I know that it isn't extremely healthy to be eating in the middle of the night, but if you're depressed you have to take care of yourself. I suggest something healthy or warm, although cookies or something sweet may make you feel better too. Only drink water though, sugar or caffeine will make it even harder to fall asleep.

Step Three:

Get comfy! Snuggle into bed with your fluffiest blanket and favorite stuffie if you have them like I do

Make sure you're in a good sleeping position and you don't have any bright lights to close to your bed. If you're cold then get under the blankets, if you're hot then spread out and turn on some AC.

Listen to your favorite sad album and release some emotions

Listen to your favorite sad album and release some emotions. Sometimes you just need to let it all out and cry, and it's always a little better if you hear someone who understands you or supports you. I strongly recommend twenty one pilots, especially their self titled album, but really any album or song with sad themes works. Try to pick something that fits in with why you're sad, I've found that helps. Listen to this type of music until you feel you've let out all of those negative feelings and you sort of feel emotionally drained.

After you've released all that tension and bad energy, listen to something happy to make yourself feel better

After you've released all that tension and bad energy, listen to something happy to make yourself feel better. Any upbeat song about love or something cheerful will do, but I personally like Pretty. Odd. or Folie à Deux. Try not to listen to any sad songs between these for maximum effect.

For me a cheery YouTube video or TV show can sometimes even have the same effect of a happy song, so feel free to watch those instead! Danisnotonfire and Amazingphil will always be my little rays of sunshine and they never fail to make me smile, so I recommend watching a few of those gaming videos. Same as with the music, try not to watch any videos or shows that could make you upset again.

Go to sleep! I know that once you feel better you may want to stay up and read fanfiction, but that might make you depressed again

Go to sleep! I know that once you feel better you may want to stay up and read fanfiction, but that might make you depressed again. You need the sleep more than you think, so at least try to catch some Zs!

Note: This method definitely won't work for everyone, but I just wanted to give you guys a few things my girlfriend taught me that make me feel a lot better. I know it's really hard to deal with depression when it strikes late at night, so these are the things I've gathered over the years that help me.
