Chapter II

From hot hot July all the way to cold cold December, Jesse remained Lukas' sweetheart and he in turn, remained her adorable little puppy. They would often be seen traversing the streets together hand-in-hand, smiling widely, knowing that they have each other. They would also often be seen kissing passionately in the corner, but they couldn't care less about the attention. "Who cares what they think when we have each other?"

On a bright new day during December, Jesse was all wrapped up in her best fur coat and winter clothes, snug and warm like a puppy wrapped in a blanket. She was huddling with Lukas, who was donning a thick black jacket, his distinctive striped shirt, and his favourite pair of Levi's. It was snowing so harshly that businesses had shut for they day and everyone was obliged to stay home. But they didn't see the cold as an excuse to not be seen huddling with your boyfriend on a cold and freezing morning.

"The snows have never been so harsh before!" Jesse had never seen any worse-case scenario such as this one. "Yeah! Feels like we're trapped on Everest!" Lukas yelled back. The blizzard winds howled so clearly, that even the most normal conversation would be drowned out. It was colder than ever before, but their love and affection for each other meant that they could overcome the cold together. They headed towards Jesse's treehouse, which looked so boarded-up, it seemed almost unsightly.

Jesse stared at the treehouse, and she thought that Jesse might need some company. "All right! Make it quick, OK? I'll be inside the house, waiting for you!" Lukas said before heading to the house to warm up. Jesse began to climb the ladder which would've been carved completely out of icicles. She kept slipping on the steps, but got her footing back, and she entered the main area. The place looked abandoned, in one corner, she saw a shivering Jesse. His mug of hot cocoa had practically frozen and he was shivering devilishly.

"Jesse! What the he- he hell are you do-do-doing? It's t- t- t- too cold here, g- g- g- get out!" Despite this acidic tone, she knew that Jesse was only trying to keep her safe. It was too cold inside the treehouse (due to a lack of any form of heating appliance, or in fact, anything electrical). 'Why wh-wh-why are you still he-he-he-heeeere?? Go... now!' Jesse's tone was nearing a snap when he noticed that Jesse would not leave, despite his obvious warnings. "No, I'm staying here. You poor poor thing." Jesse responded with firmness as she neared him. He had grown so cold, he would rather scald his skin against a dwindling candle flame than freeze to death.

"Are y-y-y-you c-c-c-c-razy?? You wi-wi-will fre-e-e-ze to death he-he-here! Don't bo-bo-bother with m-m-me! S-s-s-save yourself!" These words showed that Jesse truly cared for her. But she firmly refused to leave his side, and she went over to huddle with him. "Now just why would I do that? I would never leave you to die, big brother." Jesse was her big brother, and he had grown incredibly fond and protective of her. He would do anything to keep his blossoming little sister safe from harm, such as this.

Jesse's warmth from her coat and her somehow warming aura from her radiating love for Lukas had melted his cocoa to a tepid temperature and Jesse had begun to warm up gradually. "Th-thank you. I would say, I w-w-was wrong about you. I always told you to *cough *cough leave me so you could be safe. But *cough you came to *cough help me when I *cough *cough! needed it most. That's so *cough caring of you." Jesse could do nothing but hug her brother. The embrace gave Jesse newfound strength. He was no longer cowering in the corner with a dwindling candle, he was strong again, but still, he required time to recover.

"Jesse, why don't you stay with Lukas and I until the storm ends?" For a moment, Jesse could only smile, but he looked concerned again. "That's very *cough nice of you. But am I *cough! not gonna be a *cough waste of space?" to which she then responded "No, of course not. You can cradle on the couch and Lukas and I can just share a bed! It's perfectly fine! Matter of fact, I would feel much closer to him with you around, we'd be doing each other favours: You can warm up, and I can snuggle with Lukas!" This act of generosity and love made Jesse literally cry glass. "Thank you..." he said weakly. So they both headed towards Jesse's house, to which Jesse saw as 'warm, welcoming, and any man's dream.'

Whe they entered, Jesse had never felt so warm. It was cozy inside, and the fireplace was blazing. "Quite a place you got here! I'm impressed!" She then replied "Right? I built this along with Lukas several months ago. May not look too big, but it's home." She watched her brother place his hands by the flame and defrost his fingers which had grown into icy frozen daggers. "Thanks so much for letting me stay! Really nice of you to offer that." Jesse flushed slightly, "Well, what do you expect. A nice girl like myself watching my own brother freeze to a statue? I love you too much to do so!" She smiled at her brother before tending to Lukas, who was so busy trying to warm up, didn't hear a single word about her relationship with Jesse. He somehow knew that there's more to Jesse than meets the eye...
