The next morning, Jesse was well rested and enthusiastic. The group were on their way to finding Lukas 6 months after his disappearance and she had him in her hope thoughts from that day. "We'll find him, sis. I promise," her brother reassured her, and she quickly responded "OK. I really hope he's okay, I really miss him."
Within five minutes, the wall was taken down and the dirt disposed of in the nearby river, which was said to shimmer like silk whenever the moon is super close to the surface ("Lukas would've loved the sight of this that night. Why didn't we see this?"). They then set off into the dense forest, crossing the Great Boundaries. "OK. From experience, we are now in a very hazardous environment. Better stay close," Jesse said to the others, and the latter returned a serene nod. And how a dangerous place it is!
The weather rapidly transitioned between hot blazing summers to gloomy downpour and the group was being drenched like tissue in a tub of gushing water. And oh had it been a rough run from the beginning.
Get outta that ditch! It's gonna fill up and definitely drown you! - Jesse beckoning the others to exit a now-waterlogged ditch which could drown them under 6 feet of unforgiving coldness.
God do I feel like a swollen wet towel - Jesse complaining about how beat-up she felt after receiving a battering from the torrential downpour. She then received a damp "We all do."
Why did Lukas even go out here? And how did he survive, and yet I can't? - Petra feeling humiliated that not even herself could endure the harsh environment, given her outgoing gregarious personality. Jesse responded "Don't say things like that, it'll put you down!"
How is this a place Lukas calls 'a place to think'? You can't even go without complaining every 15 seconds that you got a massive blister on your back from this stupid downpour! - Jesse whinging about how Lukas saw a place like this a place to think about their relationship. She also had a rash from the constant beating down of ice-cold drops. "You're right. Even I would stop and wonder, how can my best friend pick this place over a presumable sanctuary?" her brother replied.
The weather remained dire and dire for at least 45 minutes, and Jesse's throat had turned raspy and dried up from her incessant whining ("So far I've heard I hate this and Are we there yet come out of your cake hole for basically forever. Just shut up!"). And just when the downpour had halted, the next cue was called and in rolled a ravaging
"Crap, a thunderstorm! And not just any, but one whose bolts are attracted to trace elements in any living organism-" but in came a snap. "Oh for God's sake, Speak English!" Jesse hastily replied "A storm that wants to kill you!" And oh was he right…
The dark cloud was looming violently above them, twisting and turning and terraforming. The white blistering bolts had almost begun to take root, desirably on them (please do not ask about how this stuff works, it'll bore you…) and Jesse saw this as their cue to "We gotta go, like RIGHT NOW!" and for the next 30 minutes met the redfeinition of 'OMG I almost died!'
To the right! Bolt to the left! Jump! Duck! Back! Go! - Given here are some examples of what has been barked in their attempt to escape what has been, to Jesse's description, a shocking experience. They were besieged on all sides by the constant flicker of burning electricity leaping down to touch and singe the ground as a warning. Jesse kept her head down as the sparks flew, and often screamed whenever a bolt landed right beside her. "It's got me! It's got me! IT'S GOT ME!" she would often scream, and her brother would sigh in dismay. I suppose she's become a little… insecure? LOOK OUT!
Jesse was eventually silenced when a bolt did strike her, she froze, then dropped to the ground. "No! NO! NO!" Jesse screamed, running to his frazzled sister and desperately searching for any pulse, murmuring "Please don't give up now! Please?!" He panicked like a hyena whilst searching and when he eventually did locate it and felt that she was still alive, he appeared petrified and ultimately relieved at the feel of her heartbeat, and then he froze. Thank. God. She's alive… she's alive…
Where am I? I am in this strange world. I am awake, yet I am asleep. Is this… my conscience? It's seemingly blank, and I can't see… anything. What's that noise? It's like… footsteps approaching behind me? Getting louder and clearer through the mist which choked me. Shivering sensations descend down my spine, and I still. Voices can be heard, the waves sneak into my ear and beat on the drum. I can hear them…
Jesse had awoken in an unusually unreal reality where she was seated on an apparent bench, situated in an apparent hall. Like her surroundings, she was dressed in a simple white gown. She saw nobody else. She then turned to notice an apparent door across the apparent hall, and getting up, decided to walk towards it. "Maybe there's someone who could help me," she thought.
Jesse reached the apparent door and reached out for the handle. But before she could turn it even so slightly, she was stopped by a voice. A warm and welcoming voice, coming from an apparent man, dressed like an archaic man. "I wouldn't open that door if I were you. And I certainly wouldn't even consider it." Jesse in turn, replied "Why, what's inside?" The man knew her confusion, and simply replied "Some things are better off left behind, child. You've much to understand about the true world around you."
The man's answer confounded Jesse, for she remained confused, "I don't quite understand. What do you mean some things are better off left behind?" The man thought, and remained silent for a moment until he answered "You're young, I don't expect you to understand yet, but if you must. Through those doors," he said, pointing to the apparent doors, 'are your worst thoughts ever conjured. And through those doors' while pointing to another apparent door, 'is a cliff, where you can dispose of these thoughts.'
"But I've never had a bad thought… have I?" The man saw the misunderstanding in her eyes, and said "Nobody has no bad thoughts, it never happens. Take the most optimistic person in the world. He may seem like he's never had a bad thought in his life, ever. But the one thing he worries of, is losing his optimism. You cannot be anything in life, even without the singlest bad thought." Jesse knew what he meant, and began to reminisce the moments where bad thoughts could never have existed, and responded "Nothing. There's always even one slightest bad thought, from the beginning. I understand now." The man chuckled "No you don't. Now wake up, you don't want to hold your group up." before becoming a puff of smoke. Jesse saw a doorway, like a rift, appear before her. On the other side, she saw herself, lying in a meadow. Knowing this as her cue, she walked through.
