Act XI: Jesse (F)

Chapter V

Six months later, Jesse had adapted to Lukas' absence. Initially, she would be heard sobbing under the sheets because she was beginning to break down from Lukas' departure, her brother would watch helplessly and slouch against a trunk as well as bury his face in his hands. "Lukas… if only I hadn't… screwed up where you say it is, perhaps you'd still be here, with me, to keep me warm." She just couldn't get over this unexpected departure, and she would stay in bed for hours, sobbing until lunch time. Fate, please bring him back to me, I beseech you. I need him!

Days passed where Jesse did leave the house, but she never spoke to anyone at all, the townsfolk saw she was disheartened, and they too felt disheartened.

Her face reminds me of… when I lost my brother…
Her sadness makes me relive the day my mother left me…
She looks so sad, and yet we are so helpless…
Why are we doing nothing to help this poor girl?

It wasn't until six months later that Jesse finally began to speak to others again, although her tone was still depressing. Firstly, she tried to speak to her brother, seeing as he was the closest one to her. Jesse had a solemn scowl on her face, and spoke with little structure. Jesse sighed, before starting.

"Look sis, I miss him too, he's one of my closest friends, and a good man. He will be back soon, keep your hopes up." But this didn't help at all, "It's been, what, six whole months since he left my life. My hopes of him returning have been shattered, might as well believe he's… he's… gone." Jesse heavily chastised this, "So what, so you can just forget about him? Jesse, he has always been there for you, he's protected you since preschool, he's only let you down once, and that is no reason to reject him forever. Think of it this way: Remember that he still loves you, he wishes to be with you again, he is always with you, even if not physically, in HERE," he said while pointing at his sister's chest.

"Yeah… I suppose it'd be a bad idea to forget him, but how am I supposed to keep him in my heart, when his absence continues to plague me?" Jesse thought before answering "Lukas depends on you to do such a thing, show him you care by, at least trying." Jesse could only nod, she was still deeply depressed by Lukas' departure, she couldn't stop blaming herself for it.

"Sis, listen. When I… lost Reuben, I couldn't stop blaming and shaming myself for 4 months saying that I was the reason he died. Do not, please do not, put yourself in my situation. It would demoralise you forever." Jesse said, his lip trembling slightly at the noun. "I know, just know that I am trying to do so right now. I know how you must be feeling now, and I am also sorry for you." She eventually got up, and without a word (not even a hug) began descending down the treehouse ladder and walking away head down. Do not put yourself in his shoes, you got that?

Jesse watched his sister walk away, and he slouched down onto his settee. "What happened? Where's the love? Why has it disappeared? Lord knows such, but I know that I must track down Lukas ASAP."

Jesse must track down and bring Lukas back before it's too late. He then had an idea.

Whilst she was walking away, demoralised and damaged, Jesse was suddenly stopped by her yelling brother. "WAIT!" She turned and saw that he was hurtling towards her. He breathlessly panted "Grab your things! We're gonna find him!" Hopeful, Jesse jovially sprinted towards her hut.
