When A Stranger Comes Knocking

Demi was basically finished with X Factor, her performance was this week and she was so nervous, she had finished an entire bottle of anti-depressants in 5 days and she was taking anxiety meds too now.

I was sitting outside the school doors, on the steps, waiting for Max to come pick me up. It's been like this since the 3rd week of X Factor, Demi doesn't pick me up from school, she's out till 7 or 8 at night and gone by 6 am too.

I felt my phone vibrate and saw a text from Demi, probably just telling me she will be home later than usual. I had just pulled my phone out when I heard Max beep the car horn.

I quickly grabbed my phone and my bag and raced to the car "Hey Maxy, what did you do today?" he looked at me and rolled his eyes "I watched Demi, and then came to pick you up. Am I taking you home or to Demi? She didn't tell me what the plans were for tonight"

"Home. It's always home, I may as well live alone with how much I'm seeing her these days" Max gave me a sad smile "She's just busy kid, she'll be finished with X Factor soon and you'll get her back" I shook my head and sighed.

"No I won't, she's starts filming glee like right after X Factor, and glee will be even more hours than now"

Max nodded and kept driving, while I unlocked my phone to see what Demi wanted.

"Hey baby, won't be home till after 10. Make sure you eat dinner and do your homework. I love you! x" I groaned and locked my phone.

"Why does she bother to ask me to eat and do my homework, it's not like she's ever home to check on me. I can't even remember the last time I had a face to face conversation with her"

Max looked at me sideways and gave me another sad smile "She's trying kid, you know she loves you right?" I give him a small nod "Yeah sure, but she has a funny way of showing it these days. She hasn't asked me about school or how I'm doing in weeks"

"Thanks for driving me home Max, I'll call you if I need anything okay?" Max nodded and gave a small wave before driving away. I sat in front of the house for an hour. I watched the gate close behind Max, as he drove out and I watched the sun go down and light the sky in pinks and purples and oranges.

As I walked inside I decided to call Mar, maybe we could do something together soon. It didn't take long for her to answer my call.

"Hey Kiddo, what's up!" I smiled into the phone, Mar is like the best big sister ever "Not much, Demi's not going to home till after 10 so I'm home alone" I knew Mar was getting sick of Demi constantly leaving me unattended, I mean I'm 16 so being home alone isn't a big deal, but because of my issues she worries about me a lot more

"Ugh what the fuck, she could've called me and I would have come and stayed the night, are you okay?" I giggled softly at her annoyed tone "Yeah Mar I'll be fine, I'm home alone every night these days" I heard Mar sigh "Okay, but promise to call me if you need anything? Promise me okay?"

I smiled into the phone and nodded "Yeah Mar I promise, I'm gonna put on a movie okay?" Mar eventually said goodbye and hung up. I was in my room by this point, and lazily staring at my stack of books I was meant to be studying before sighing and grabbing my laptop.

A movie sounds a lot better than chemistry or, if I really wanted to torture myself, French.

Opening my laptop, I checked my phone again, hoping Demi might have text me to see how I was doing. Sighing at a lack of concern coming from my supposed mom I clicked into a movie folder and selected The Conjuring.

Probably not my brightest idea, since I'm home and alone and Demi lives in a mansion, but I'm a sucker for scary movies.

I hit play and watched as the screen went black, I carefully looked around my room and focused back on the screen. Maybe this wasn't a good idea but it's also such a good movie.
