** Flashback **

The Yule Ball was five days away, yet Maegan was still hoping for an invitation from Fred Weasley. Alright, they weren't official, nor even known to be interested in each other ( she was, though, for a fact ), but she had at least expected a hint. Maybe she was being selfish, and he didn't like her at all, seeing that the twins and her were best friends and all that, but she couldn't help it.

It was when they were seated in Potions with the fourth years that Fred asked someone. But that someone wasn't her, no it was Angelina Johnson. Chaser of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team, and brilliantly beautiful.

Maegan gulped down the lump in her throat and willed the tears away, hoping deeply that she rejected him. Unfortunately, she said "alright, then" and Fred winked at Ron and Harry. "See, piece of cake."

George, Fred's twin and who was currently sat in between Fred and Maegan, nudged her. "Hey, you okay?" He asked her, and she shrugged without any emotion evident on her face. "Amazing, why wouldn't I be?"

"Quiet!" Professor Snape hissed in their direction, and George gave her a 'really' look before mouthing "we'll talk about this later."

They didn't, though, because straight after the Potions class ended Maegan rushed off to her favourite spot, the Library, not giving Fred even a chance of talking to her. He tried to, though, but she had walked off without answering him.

She missed dinner, and didn't turn up to the common room till nine p.m. "Maegan! Where have you been?"

Hermione rushed up to her as soon as she climbed through the portrait.

"Nowhere." She replied, heart hurting even more when she saw Fred talking to Angelina.

George came up to her, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. "Here." He handed her one of those crackers that you pull open and reveal tons of confetti and a joke. Maegan raised her eyebrows at him, but put her books down anyway and he winked at her. "Well then, pull it."

She burst out laughing at the innuendo, and that's when Fred noticed her.

"Maegan! We missed you!" He rushed to her side, and she forced a half smile. "Sure you did, yeah."

"What do you mean? Course we missed you. We always do."

"You have Ang- Yeah well I'm just going to open this..." She stopped herself from saying anything, really not wanting him to find out. George grinned at her as she pulled the cracker apart.

Maegan smiled as a ton of red and golden confetti burst out, covering both the twins and her. She laughed, and quickly caught the paper. She read it, and George moved to stand in front of her, crossing his arms and giving her a smug look.

The paper read "Wanna go to the ball with me?" and then in a code language that she had long forgotten, which her and the twins had made a while back to pass prank ideas in class without teachers finding out if they grabbed a paper from them: "as friends, but no-one has to know that."

She smiled wide, feeling so grateful for a friend like George, and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Of course I will. Thank you." She whispered the last bit in his ear, as his arms slid around her waist and held her.

"Awww aren't they adorable." She heard Ginny say, and Fred rolled his eyes playfully. "Great now I'm going to be the third wheel!"

When they pulled away, Maegan locked eyes with George and they both burst out laughing, it being a natural reaction whenever they were together and people made jokes that they were a couple.

** End of Flashback **

Maegan smiled at George, who had saved her from so much heartbreak the last months of her sixth year. Fred and Angelina had started dating, but George had always been there to supply a shoulder for her to cry on. He even made a mini firework show once, to cheer her up when she'd seen Fred and Angelina make out in the common room.
