Every witch or wizard is born with an ink mark somewhere on their body, which they share with their soulmate. They are usually symbols that are key to their relationship, they can be roses, fireworks, a book, pretty much anything. When the person is close to you, the mark will react. On your seventeenth birthday, if you have not yet found your soulmate, you are given a huge hint towards their identity. If you have met them, you are told how close your relationship is to them.

Maegan's last first period of her fourth year was Charms, which so happened to be her favourite. She was, for the first time, excited for the summer as she would be spending it at the Burrow.

She plopped down in her seat next to Hermione Granger, her best friend. They were fellow house mates and had thus become fast friends in their first year, sharing a dormitory and most of their classes. Maegan was always the first to hear of all the adventures that she, Ron and Harry got up to.

"Morning class!" Professor Flitwick stepped up onto his stool and waved his wand. In a flicker of a second, the room was silent. "Today we'll be learning how to perform a silencing charm."

The class dragged on, but soon it was time for their second period, and their third, and finally it was lunch time.

Hermione and Maegan walked with Ron and Harry to the Great Hall, where they joined Ginny at a table. The topic was casually directed to soulmates, a topic that was becoming more and more popular as they were approaching their seventeenth birthday.

"I just think it's a weird idea that I could have been seeing my soulmate every day for years without knowing if it's them, just because they tell you that you're not supposed to reveal what your ink mark looks like." Ginny said.  "Wouldn't you be able to find your soulmate so much faster if you can reveal your mark to everyone?"

"That does kind of ruin the fun and mystery of it all, don't you think?" Hermione replied as she grabbed a bread roll off of one of the plates in the middle of the table. "You're allowed to reveal it if you haven't found your soulmate when you're thirty, right?"

"Something like that." Ron had spoken up, his mouth stuffed with bread as was the usual for him. "I like the fact they give you one big hint on your seventeenth birthday, I've heard it does help a whole lot."

Maegan was barely listening to their conversation. As a muggleborn, everybody had been explaining the concept of the soulmate marks to her since she arrived at Hogwarts, but her mark had never before reacted to somebody. She had once or twice felt the slightest burn, but it had been after a quidditch match and there were so many people there, she had been unable to even slightly pinpoint who her soulmate could be.

She only knew that her ink mark was a little firework, almost like the sparklers her parents used to light for her and put on her birthday cakes. The lines that resembled the sparks would sometimes move and prickle her skin when she was walking the hallway, but she had always thought it was part of the magic of the ink mark.

She was afraid that they had already left Hogwarts, or that they were in an entirely different country. And she knew that she wouldn't find her soulmate this summer, either, because she would be at the Burrow, and she already knew everybody at the Burrow. The Weasleys were like a second family to her, although this applied mainly to Mrs Weasley, Ron and Ginny, as she hadn't spoken much to the rest of the family.

Maegan zoned out for pretty much the rest of lunch, and the last bit of the day passed by so quickly that she was back in her bed before she realised it. Tomorrow would be the day that she would be going to the Burrow, and to say she was excited would be an understatement.
