The press conference was boring as hell. It only included me (the captain) our two assistant captains (Tara and Vicky) and of course our coaching team. It fragged on for a useless two hours and by the end of it I raced backstage and to my belongings. Checking my phone instantly. Hoping that there was something from Luke, I was more than disappointed when I saw nothing was new. Not from twitter, Skype or messaging.
“You seem upset.” A voice said. I turned around and almost jumped when I saw Luke standing there. I clutched onto my heart, feeling it beat a thousand times quicker than usual. Luke laughs and steps forward holding me steady with one hand while the other held something behind his back.
“You scared me.”
“Not what I intended but I’m glad you’re happy that you saw me.” After gaining my balance once again, slipping my phone into my pocket and adjusting my shirt a little, seeing how it crumpled a little when he scared me.
“What do you have there?” I asked, pointing at the hand that he still kept behind his back. For a moment he was confused, and then he somehow replayed the question in his head and brought it forward. A beautiful bouquet of flowers mixed with roses and tulips, my favourite. At the sight of it I wanted to cry of happy tears, no one has really bought me bouquets out of the blue let alone buy me flowers so seeing this coming from Luke was the best thing ever.
“Do you like them? I thought the size was a little too much but I only wanted to buy the best for you.” He hands them over to me and through the feeling of shock I almost drop them but thank god Luke pulled me into a hug just before I did.
“Thank you. I love them, so, so much. They’re stunning.”
“Like you.” Was what I thought he said.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing. I said nothing.” Alright, so that answer did disappoint me a little but it is Luke. We’re best friends. Nevertheless, I forced a smile. Over the years I have mastered how to make a genuine fake smile and no one will really know that it’s not real. Except somehow Luke knew and he got me to look at him straight in the eye.
“You’re not happy? Are you?” He mumbles.
“I’m happy.” I try again but he wasn’t taking any of it and took the bouquet of flowers from my arms and set them aside on a table. Next thing I know he’s carrying me up and throwing me over his shoulder. I’ve got to admit, this is cheering me up a little and I start hitting Luke’s back as I beg him to put me down.
“I’m not going to let you down until you show me your true smile! Come one Nicole! I know it’s there somewhere!!”
“But how can you see it if I’m over your shoulder?” I mentioned. He puts me back on his feet and holds my face, his warm hands almost making me fall on the floor. Whatever this feeling was, I am more than afraid of it.
“Please? Smile. For me?” His blue eyes pierced through me and I couldn’t say ‘no’ to that face, so I did. I smiled, for him. It was the least I can do and if it meant seeing him smile then I had to. Because since earlier today, I realized that his smile is what makes me carry on. When I saw him smile back I hugged him, more than grateful that I have the most amazing best friend in the world.
“Happy Luke?”
“More than that. I’m delighted.” His hands find their way up to my cheeks again and my heart stopped the moment I noticed he was leaning in closer. I shut my eyes, prepared for what was too come but what happened was different to what I thought was going to happen. Instead of him going to my lips I felt his warm lips pressing against my forehead. They lingered there for a while until Luke pulled away.
