I stared a bit longer. Maybe it’s just my eyes. I haven’t been sleeping much so it’s just my eyes. But then it happened again. A slight movement of his chin. It’s small but it’s something. I kept staring at him, waiting for the moves to get bigger. What seemed like forever I see the first major movement his eyelids. Slowly but painfully they opened, flickering a bit and opened just slightly but enough for me to see the blue in his eyes.

“Luke?” I whispered. His eyes slowly shifted to me. Upon landing on me I could see the corner of his mouths rising to a small and extremely painful smile. His eyelids opened a bit more and just seeing them again made me burst into tears. Happy tears. He’s finally awake. My shaking hands reach up to his still bruised and slightly swollen face. I’ve got to be careful, considering he’s still got everything connected to him. “Wait here, I’ve got to tell the doctor.” Luke painfully smiled and I rushed out, with the largest smile I have ever put on.

“Nicole Stamkos?” The doctor asks. “Is everything alright? Wait….he’s awake?” I nodded quickly and in an instant a team of doctors and nurses rushed into Luke’s room. I stood outside, wiping the happy tears from my face as I struggled to call Ashton. Eventually I do and he picks up after the fourth ring.

“Nicole?”

“Ash….” I took a deep breath in and out. Man being this excited and happy is nerve wracking. “Ash…” I repeated. “Luke’s awake. Luke is awake Ash. Come on here!!!” I heard the phone drop onto the ground and heard people scurrying for the phone. It gets picked up again and I hear heavy breathing at the other end.

“Hemmo is awake.” Ashton breathes out. “THE HEMMO IS AWAKE!!! Oh my god. Oh my god. I am hyperventilating right now. We’ll be there as soon as we can!” Ash hangs up and I wanted to scream out loud of happiness. Luke is awake. After two months he is finally awake. The doctors and nurses walked out of the room looking as relieved as I was, Dr. Edwards walks up to me tapping his pen against his clipboard. He too has a huge smile on his face. Everyone that walked out of the room did.

“He’s doing well. We’ll keep him in the hospital until he is fully recovered by after his full recovery we recommend he doesn’t get back on the stage for two months after. But it’s outstanding, he’s awake.”

“Can I see him?” The doctor smiles and I walk slowly into the room. I could see Luke just fiddling a little with the IV tube that is connected to his wrist. Seeing him move this way was more than relieving. It’s a miracle. All those weird things, that were connected to him, are now gone and now the only thing left was the rubber IV tubing. I slowly walk in and Luke looks up at me, smiling immediately but his smile soon turns into a look of confusion as he stares at me. “Something wrong Luke?”

Luke doesn’t say anything for a while and just stares at me. His lips part but he doesn’t say anything but then he looks back up at me with his eyebrows scrunched together. “Why do you look like you’re dead? I mean you’re beautiful, still and always will, but you look really ‘dead’.” He explains, putting up his fingers to indicate quotation marks. I laughed at him and just walked to the bed, joined him there and cuddled with him just the way I would when he was in his coma.

Luke wraps his arms around me and he does so in a way that he can hold my hand nicely. Finally, I can have his hands intertwine with mind again. Thinking about all the drama that has happened, the worry and now he’s awake, I laugh in relief a little bit more and then bury my face into his chest. “Babe? Are you alright? I mean, you’re laughing but then you’re also hiding your face. Is it because of what I said?”

“You’re clueless aren’t you?” I look up at him and he looks down at me. “Of course, you were in a coma.” Luke’s eyes widen and I could feel my stomach turning as I saw the familiar blue eyes looking at me. Eventually they relax.
