BONDS OF DESTINY
- XIII -

The car ride on the way back had been quiet and uneventful. I hadn't engaged into the conversation as my mind was on those unfortunate souls in the woods. I wanted to keep the picture, but I also did not want Argent to find it, so instead Shane kept it. Something told me those wolves weren't actually rogues. They were something else, refugees? Were they members of the Raven pack? That would weakly explain why the girl was carrying a picture of my mom together with a boy I did not know. The photo was old that was for sure considering my mom had looked so young.

Shane had promised to figure out as much as he could, though I wanted to confront my mother myself. First the dagger, now this. What was going on here?

Argent must have sensed my whirlwind of emotions because he had kept glancing at me, but I ignored him and he did not push me.

"I shouldn't have let you come," he spoke quietly after a couple of hours. I looked over at him stopping in the process of biting the knuckle of my thumb off. A habit that occurred every time I was thinking too much. He was looking at me with a thoughtful expression, his eyes showing worry for me.

"I had to see it. Have you heard from your trackers?" I asked looking at him expectantly but he merely shook his head.

"No, not any that's worth the attention. They said they've tracked their scent several miles out, but nothing besides that. Just their footprints."

I nodded going back to biting my knuckle.

"Will you stop that," he asked, a shade of irritation ran across his face and he reached out to pull my hand from my mouth.

"Was this like the other packs?" I asked and searched his face which to my annoyance turned expressionless and he let go of my hand.

"Argent?" I asked moving on the couch and I watched him fall down on to the couch opposite mine. We had been sitting in silence by the TV and couch arrangement. Argent ran his hand over his face, though it remained expressionless, his mind closed off making it impossible for me to get a proper read on him.

"Lucas, the guys are camping out for the night. They'll continue to follow the trail in the morning," Ryder spoke coming out from the kitchen. He had been mysteriously silent throughout the whole day only speaking by orders from Argent.

"Good," He spoke his voice tired and I felt my wolf wanting to soothe him. I bit my bottom lip, my hands folding together in my lap to force myself stay put on my couch.

"You want me to go over the transcripts?" Ryder asked and nodded in my direction as to say he didn't mind if Argent wanted to spend time with me. I was not sure about that though. Yes, earlier today had been nice and all, but I still wasn't about to let go of the promise to change my ways.

"No, I have a few things to attend to anyways," he responded slowly and glanced at me. I knew he was thankful for the interruption but by his brief glance I also noticed how he still wanted to be near me. Obviously, he was frustrated with himself for letting me see the scene earlier and not held his ground. Of course I was affected by the vile blood scene, but still it was something I had to see. Something I needed to see, but to be honest I think the picture which held an even bigger question of who they were made a bigger impression on me than anything else, and it was not something I could share with Argent. At least not yet.
