Taro Yamada:
He's wasting his life away. He sits by the fountain every school day reading a book instead of socialising. They all say he's wasting the best years of his life, but he's happy. Why can't they let him be happy doing what he wanted to do? He isn't hurting anyone by sitting alone and reading. He just doesn't want to fall into the stereotype. He's his own person, why can't they see that?
Another day alone sat by the fountain. The water trickled down it behind him as he continued reading. He could hear the other students around him. The guys bragging about who they've slept with and the girls obsessing over their looks and their weight. He doesn't care to join either. Only one person seems understands him, his almost identical sister Taeko. She got it. She didn't want to fit into the mound either. They just wanted to be themselves.
That evening, he found himself sat by his bedroom window, watching the street outside. He could feel the cold breeze through the open window. He had a black hoodie draped loosely over his shoulders and a book rested on his lap. He was alone, so they couldn't judge the introvert. He is awoken from his daydream by the door opening. He looked over and saw his sister Taeko. She was wearing a black long sleeved cropped jumper, black high waisted skinny jeans and converse. She was wearing makeup, and looked like any 'normal' teenager her age.
"I'm sneaking out, come with me please." She begged. He wanted to say no to her, tell her that was a bad idea, but he couldn't. He sighed and stood up, putting his hoodie on properly. It was a little baggy, but it was cozy that way.
"Alright. I don't want to be out too long, though." He told her as he put down his book. She nodded her head, excitedly grabbing his hand and pulling him out of the room. They shouldn't have gone out that night. Groups of violent gangs and thieves barely older than the Yamada twins owned the streets in the dark. They hadn't known that. The 2 introverted twins kept close together, not knowing what to expect. Their streets were usually empty, and were fairly safe. Where they went wasn't. They were approached by a group of teenagers their own age, their pasts as rough as the next.
"Give is everything you have." They demanded angrily. The siblings could only watch as rack of them pulled out pocket knives. They hadn't brought anything with them, assuming they wouldn't need anything.
"We don't have anything." Taeko told them bravely. They turned to stare angrily at her. One particularly violent gang member launched himself at Taeko, stabbing the knife into her stomach. She screamed in pain, collapsing back into Taro's arms as the gang member yanked the knife out of her stomach. Realising what he had done, the others sprinted away from the area. Taro held his sister close and began to cry a little. One night trying to be like every other teenager could cost him his twin sister, his best friend in the whole world. The water splashed in the fountain that Taro was sat beside. He had a book in his hand like he usually did. He just wanted things to be exactly as they were, but they never could be. His one night of sneaking out 'just like any normal teenager' had ended in the worst way possible. Taeko was gone, and she was never coming back to him. He didn't want to be like other teenagers. He would trade the rest of his teenage years, the ones his parents described as the best years of your lives, to have his twin back with him.
He wished they could've just left the introverted bookworm to himself. They shouldn't have tried to force them into societies mould, because it had costed one life. Who knows how many 'misfits' lives have gone because of this. He didn't want to be like that, and he refused to be changed. They told him he was wasting his life, but they'd taken a huge part of it from him.
