Boy meets girl.
That was the ever repeating story for men.
Usually, it ended with exchanged phone numbers and promises to catch up somewhere along the lines.
And usually, it ended with boy falling for girl.
And of course, Ezra was the living cliché of this. In fact, Ezra was like the stereotypical 1980's John Cusack - Richard Gere leading man in a rom-com. Okay, sure, he'd never actually gone to a girl's house holding a boom box full volume, but he'd been pretty close to doing so. And falling in love was something Ezra was scared and excited to do, because the world wasn't a 1980's rom-com where everything was resolved in two hours and you were expected to live happily ever after.
And then of course, Illyana happened I'm the most strange of circumstances, and he started to wonder if one was capable of having a happily ever after...

"Hey!" Illyana said cheerfully, stepping out of her room sporting pajamas - duck pajamas. "Don't judge me; they're comfortable and I've had them for a really long time. Pretty much impossible not to grow attached," Illyana explained with a light giggle.
Ezra, who was falling quick and hard for Illyana, never realized how dorky and adorable she could be. Maybe it was something that hadn't ever crossed his mind when dating other women in the past, and perhaps a defining quality that matched his own personality. The two were alike, but never carbon copies. Perhaps, and dammit, how he hated to think of this so early on - after just a day, really, Illyana was the 'one'.
"Duck pajamas! If only you would have told me this was going to turn into a slumber party for two, I would have brought my canine pajamas!" Ezra exclaimed, getting up from his seat, walking up to Illyana and wrapping his arms around her, into a tight bear hug.
"Well, in my defense, I didn't know this was going to end up being a two people slumber party," Illyana explained happily. She, too, wrapped her arms around Ezra. A deep sigh was threatening its way out of her mouth, though fighting it back was easy - still, she felt happy with Ezra. No, not just happy, but also safe.
"You're a dork, y'know?" Ezra spoke, pulling away from Illyana. She looked up at him and furrowed her brow.
"A dork? Oh please, I'm not a dork. If anything, I'm just... Unique!" Illyana said, moving her arms around.
"Unique? Really?" Ezra asked jokingly, while Illyana frowned. "Raw and real - the most real person you'll ever truly meet, Ezra Koenig," she said in a whisper.
"Well, let's be honest now. I don't honestly know much about you," Ezra admitted, sitting back down on the couch.
True.
They had mostly discussed his life the night before, which he'd agreed could be found in a quick Google search.
"Okay, what do you want to know?" Asked Illyana, sitting next to Ezra.
The lead singer thought for a while, before deciding that, "We should start off simple - early life. The little milestones."
Illyana nodded. "I'm not full of milestones but... Okay, well, um, my full name is Illyana Jean Romanov, and I'm 27. I was born in North London to a Scottish mother and a Russian father who worked for an architecture firm. When I was two, we were relocated here to New York and well, we stayed here. Life was pretty much good, I had a caring brother, Justin, and a few years a later, a sister named Morgan. My parents were happy, I was happy and we were pretty spoiled - with moderation, of course. Taught the value of the dollar. I was a great student, learned many languages, and I ended up going to NYU, getting an English Major, like you told me you did," Illyana recounted, smiling fondly at the memories of her young adult years. "I got my job at the Times' as a shot of luck, really. I was walking by their HQ and well, thinking journalism was my thing, I decided to take a chance and apply for a job there. The news really wasn't my strength. Music and the arts, however, were my passion. I don't know why, but music is something I can't live without. I started listening to The Beatles, and honestly, without any shame, I can say that Paul McCartney was my first love."
Ezra burst out in laughter at her revelation. "McCarntey? Really?" He said, clapping.
"Yes, him. I- it was love at first sight, really. He was adorable and... Yeah. His voice is just like, 'swoon!'," Illyana replied with a light shrug.
"That's... That's perfect," Ezra said, again hugging Illyana. She welcomed his arms yet again.
"Can I tell you a secret?" She asked, looking down at his hair as he hugged her waist tightly while keeping his head on her thighs. "Yeah, of course," he replied.
Illyana pressed her lips tightly and ran her hand through his hair, shy to admit that not only had she been Googling him all day but that...
"I've downloaded all your songs into my iPhone, there, I said it."
Ezra's jaw dropped, and he lifted himself up. "W-woah, really?" He asked in utter disbelief. Yeah, okay, there were other things she could have said, but this was... Better. "And what did you think?" He asked.
She was quiet for a moment. "Hand me my phone," Illyana pointed at the iPhone on the table.
Obediently, Ezra grabbed her phone and handed it to her. Illyana then searched through the 'Vampire Weekend' playlist and scrolled down their whole catalog before finding the one song.
I dont wanna feel it for the second time
And I don't wanna call you up or wait for signs
I just can't pretend I'm gonna make you mine
"... Yeah, I'm not a fan of Chromeo but... It's a great song, I must admit," Illyana said. "It's romantic and sweet."
Ezra grinned and grabbed Illyana's hand, pulling her to the empty space in the living room. He placed his hands on her waist and whispered, "Psst, how would you like to dance?"
I never wanna be the last to know
So I guess I'll just go back to laying low
Illyana let a chuckle escape her lips and nodded, placing her arms on his shoulders. They moved slowly, like the song, and their eyes locked together.
Now I dont wanna feel it for the second time
And I don't wanna call you up or wait for signs
I just can't pretend I'm gonna make you mine
As they danced, Ezra realized that perhaps Rostam was right, and it'd been too long since he'd felt this way. Here came a feeling he thought he'd forgotten, that had perhaps died somewhere along the road.
I never wanna be the last to know
So I guess I'll just go back to laying low
As the song ended, and with their bodies pressed together, Ezra looked down at Illyana, who looked up at him. He leaned in and whispered, "I'm about to do something incredibly brash and stupid - but I'm not sorry." And with that, Ezra cupped her face and he leaned in, kissing her softly.
Holy shit. I'm dying. What is going on. Don't you dare pull the fuck away, you nerd.
Illyana kissed him back, lovingly and gently, pressing her hands on his face. A smiled tugged in the corners of her lips, and her heart skipped a beat or two.
A minute? Two? Ezra didn't know, but he didn't want to pull away, until he did. "I-I'm so sorry, I don't even know..." Ezra said, finally pulling away. He stuttered as he tried to speak, but even if he said that he was sorry, he knew he wasn't.
He was happy he'd done it.
Illyana, on the other side, was breathless. In fact, breathless couldn't even describe it.
"T-that's okay, it's okay, I promise."
Ezra snickered and nodded. "Thank you for the lovely evening. I-I think I should go. I'll call you, alright?"
"Alright. Take care," Illyana said.
