*Matt pov*
I was playing video games alone in my tiny flat as usual, my work done for the day. I worked from home as a hacker. It was lucky I was skilled at hacking, as despite being a literal genius, I never cared enough to apply myself to anything. I was even raised in an institute for gifted children (which was also an orphanage) but I always preferred to slack off and play games. Not like Mello...
I put my game down with a sigh as my eyes filled with tears. Mello had been my best friend in Wammy's House though he was the complete opposite of me. He was driven and determined to the point that he left when he wasn't chosen to be successor to L, the world's greatest detective. He was hot headed and angry where I was calm and chill. Yet somehow we fit together. He wasn't just my childhood best friend, he was my first and only love.
But I hadn't seen him since he left when we were both only fourteen and disappeared without a trace. For all my extraordinary hacking skills, the only thing I'd never been able to track down was the one thing that mattered to me. The hope that today might be the day I found him was the only thing that made me even bother to wake up every day.
I couldn't forget him, I couldn't ever get over him or let him go. I'd tried, but nothing or no one made me feel the way he had. I fell asleep thinking of him and was woken hours later by my phone ringing. I grabbed it and answered it just to shut it up.
"Matt...I need you."
My heart dropped as I heard the voice I'd longed to hear ever since he'd left without so much as a goodbye. His beautiful voice was followed by a sob.
"Mello, where are you?"
"I'm at <insert location>"
"Ok, I'm coming."
"Matt..." There was another sob and then the call ended.
I grabbed my car keys and ran out, jumped into my red car and sped to the location. It was still early so there was no one else on the roads and I was there in minutes. I jumped out and saw a lifeless bloody form lying on the ground.
"No..." I ran over, knelt down and screamed when I turned the body over and saw the unmistakable blonde hair of my friend, or what little blonde I could see through the blood. His pretty face was covered in blood on one side but he was still breathing.
I hurried home and took care of him for the next week. He wouldn't let me call for medical help, or tell me exactly what happened, just that he was in an "accident." Yeah, no shit Mells.
I bought him back to his own place after a week, so he'd feel more comfortable around his own things. I helped him get settled in, then went out to buy him chocolate (he was still a chocoholic) and settled down to play video games after bringing it to him. I planned to stay with him as long as he needed me, or forever if he'd let me. He pulled out his laptop and started working.
"You need to rest, Mells, your work can wait."
He glared at me.
"Why are you still here Matt? You did what I needed you for, you can go now. I'll call you if I ever need you again."
My heart broke at his words.
"What? You're literally saying you just used me?"
"What else did you think?" He threw me a scornful look.
"But Mello, we - "
"Look this isn't Wammy's House. We're not kids anymore, there's no us. This is the real world and I don't need you now so get lost."
I never thought he'd be so cruel to me.
I knew he could be cruel with others but he'd never spoken to me so harshly before."Why did you even call me? Why me of all people?"
"Because I knew you'd come." He replied.
"Right. You knew I'd come and then you could just discard me when I'd done what you wanted. So this it, you're fucking off out of my life again, right? I mean what have you ever done for me, Mello? Besides make me fall in love with you, then just leave when you didn't get your own way over something. After I put up with your mood swings and general asshole-nish [new word lol] Never mind how I searched for you every fucking day and cried over you every fucking night, you only care about yourself and what you need."
I wanted to storm out but I broke down crying instead. He came over to sit beside me.
"Matt, you're wrong. I do care about you, you're the only person I've ever cared about. I wanted to call you but..."
"But what? You forgot my number until you needed something?" I asked bitterly.
He reached out and took my hand, looking like he was trying not to cry too.
"I was in the mafia, Matt." He said quietly.
"You were what?!"
"I was in the mafia and it was too dangerous to get you involved. I don't care about myself, I'm a piece of shit who deserves to die anyway, but you don't and I couldn't risk you getting hurt because of me."
"Mello, I'd die for you."
"I know. But I'm not worth dying for. You are. I died a little each day I was without you. I love you, Matt. I'm so sorry I left you."
I wrapped my arms around him gently, still aware of his injuries.
"Then let me stay with you."
He hugged me back.
"Yes, please stay. I'm sorry I said those horrible things. I just wanted to protect you." He sobbed.
"Hey, shush. You can't protect my heart by leaving me alone and that's all I care about. I love you Mello, I always did."
I dried his tears with my finger, then ran it over his lips. He stared at me, his eyes still enchanted me and I had to kiss him. It was the most wonderful thing I'd ever done.

Better save your heart" ♥️
