I was looking for some information in a storage room at the mafia hideout when I tripped over a foot. I looked under a desk and saw Mello curled up underneath, his head on his knees.
"Mello?"
He looked up and his eyes were red and full of tears.
"Mello..." I repeated softly.
I got down on the floor and squished myself in beside him.
"What's wrong?"
I was shocked to find my usually fearless leader in tears and looking so vulnerable.
"No one likes me." He sniffed. "No one's ever liked me. I've only ever had one friend and I haven't seen him since I was fourteen. I know I'm a bitch but just because I hate everyone, doesn't mean they have to hate me back."
He put his head back on his knees and cried some more. I put my hand over his and let him cry for a bit.
"That's not true, Mello."
"It is true. I just want to be the best, whatever it takes. But it gets lonely."
"Hey listen to me. It's definitely not true. I like you."
"Really?" He looked at me with eyes full of hope.
"Yes really. I like you a lot."
I leaned in and kissed his cheek. He smiled through his eyes.
"You're not just saying that?"
I shook my head and he studied my face, then smiled again.
"You're really serious. You even kissed me. Kiss me again."
"Only if you ask nicely." I smiled, nudging his side gently.
"Please kiss me again."
I kissed his cheek again and he wiped his remaining tears away.
"Promise you won't tell anyone about this?"
"I promise." He seemed so childlike in that moment, my heart just about broke for him.
"You can come talk to me anytime about anything. You don't have to be alone. We can be friends."
"Yes! I mean yes please."
I kissed his cheek again.
"One for luck. Now come on Mr Mafia Boss, we've got work to do."
I stood up and held my hand out, he took it and I helped him up.
"Thank you, Y/N. I like you too."
