Chapter Five-
That night I’m asked to stand guard with Adriana.
“How you holding up?” I ask her.
She just looks at the Dunkin-donuts across the way, “Missing everything. Have you ever felt like… like you were so fragile in the moment, yet so ,much more strong?” She shifts her brown eyes to me.
I sigh softly, “As if a wall was crashed down only to be repaired with newer-better bricks?”
“Yeah.” She says.
“I guess that’s normal for us now, who ever knew how psychologically messed up someone could get after one day of flesh eating beasts and watching your teachers and friends be killed before your eyes.”
“Pft.”
“God I could go for a coffee right now…” Adriana sighs.
“Go ahead, I can stand guard.” I say.
“Want anything?” She asks.
I smile, “Chocolate frosted please.”
“You’re the best.” She replies and runs to the dunkin.
Every night is a sleeping sorrow.
My eyes awaken in shock.
For the next day to come is disaster.
A empty non-stopping clock.
Gunshots are heard in the distance. Not so far from us. Then screams. I roll my eyes and hide behind a shipping truck. I’m grabbed behind from a walker. I squeal and hit his head with the butt of my gun. He stumbles back and shuffles out the truck. I kick him in the stomach and push him against the trucks trunk. I stab him with my hunting knife.
“God damn.” I growl. At least I wasn’t bitten.
Adriana comes back with our food. I tear up my doughnut.
“Any trouble?” I ask her.
She sips from her coffee slowly, “Nah.”
“Then maybe you would like to share how you haven’t gotten into any trouble.” A voice says from behind.
“What the hell.” Adriana says, turning around.”
“Who the hell are you?” I say.
“People, I would like to know what the hell you guys are doing here in the middle of the night without any adults.” One of the older teenagers, a girl with pink hair and freckles, laughs.
“Guarding.” I reply. “From people like you. Hey, we don’t want to hurt anybody. Just leave.”
A teen boy snarls, “Why should we leave?”
“Why not?” Adriana replies, a smile in her voice.
I cross my arms and look down,
“Guys let’s just leave..” Another boy says.
I look up in recognition then I gasp, “…I thought you were dead.”
