Back To Basics

The clouds graced the sky as I walked and walked.

I left school, not even looking back.

I left my car in the parking lot, not even bothering to drive instead of walk the streets when rain was threatening to pour down.

I checked my phone and it was almost eight o'clock. I hadn't even realized I had been walking for so long. The only reason I looked down at my phone was because I noticed it had gotten dark.

I felt a drop of rain hit my forehead, and then another, and then another.

Before I knew it, it was pouring.

I looked up at a sign and knew where I was...somewhere I hadn't been in forever.

I knocked on a familiar door, shivering slightly from the rain and my drenched clothes.

"Chase?"

I tried to smile, but it wasn't really shown, "Hey, Dean."

"Why are you out in the rain? Come in--"

"I just want to talk to Ada. Can I?"

"Uh, yeah, let me go get her." he closed the door a bit and I waited.

The rain kept coming down and soon Ada was at the door. She wrapped a blanket around herself when she felt the chill of the wind outside, but she looked confused.

"Chase?"

"I love him too much." My tears easily mixed in with the raindrops hitting my face. "I gave him everything I had and all I have to show for it are two beautiful children, Ada."

"Honey..."

"I feel used and I feel broken and all I can think of is that time we sat in our kitchen on a rainy night and we swore we'd never be broken by anyone."

"I remember that."

"I need you." I rocked back and forth on me feet, "I need my best friend."'

"Best friend?"

"The one that knew me before I had a husband and kids. The one that hated me so much that she had no choice but to love me."

She giggled and wiped under her eye, "That's sweet."

"I'm tired of having my heart broken...the last couple of months has been nothing but broken hearts and broken promises."

"Hey, I kept my promise."

"Promise me you'll always be my best friend, okay?"

I remembered asking her that years ago, and she responded in the exact way I knew she would.

"I swear..."

"I'm sorry for the whole Disneyland thing, too. It wasn't just you who made some mistakes when we were there. One of us had to be the bigger person, and you tried to be, but I was still to wrapped up in my own problems that I couldn't be a woman about it."

"I understand, I really do." A smile graced her face and it made a few more tears spill over. Not that she could see them because of the intense rain I was standing in outside of her front door. "Come in so you can get some dry clothes before you catch pneumonia."

I waddled into her house, being too wet to walk normally. I knew where everything was, but she went around her house grabbing clothes and towels for me.

"Here, take a hot shower, and put on these clothes." she handed me some oversized pajama pants a top, and I was more than thankful.

I started the shower and the steam filled up the bathroom. I got out of my wet clothes and it felt amazing to have hot water hit my cold skin.
