Chapter Thirty Seven: The Name

Xayromie Perez’s Point of View

I was caught off guard when she called me Clyde. No had ever dared to call me by that name ever since she died. I hated that name; at ni minsan ay di ko na muling ginamit ang pangalang iyon. I always introduce myself as Xayromie Perez and nothing more. But how did this stupid girl knew that name? She left me there at the hallway dumbfounded. Buong klase ‘nung araw na iyon ay wala akong naintindihan. I want to ask her how she freaking knew that name but I can’t bring myself so. That’s why I just shut the topic up.

Nevertheless, were still putting a show in front of our audience. Of course, kahit pa naguguluhan at nagtataka ako ay kailangan pa ring matuloy ng plano. But I’m actually getting tired of this stunt. I know that Vance is jealous of me, I can see it. But jealous wasn’t just the thing that I wanted him to feel. I wanted him to feel the rage that I felt when he cheated on me. I want him to regret everything that he had done. And that girl? I want her to beg at me. I want her to do everything para lang bumalik ako sa kanya.

“Mr. Perez?” napatingin ako sa professor namin.

“Hey, you’re drowning to your own thoughts. Are you alright?” tanong naman ng katabi ko. She’s looking at me with concern in her eyes. I feel like being mesmerized by those black and rounded eyes of hers. But what it is in those eyes that I feel like my soul is being captivated by just merely looking at it?

“I think we just have the best representative of the year.” Narinig kong sabi ng professor naming at tumingin sa akin at sa katabi ko. And I mentally curse him ng marealize ko kung ano ang tumatakbo sa isip niya. “I think the crown is ours this year.” Nakangiti pa niyang dagdag.

“Mr. Perez, Miss Buentaje…” pa-suspense pa niyang tawag sa amin. “I am assigning the both of you to be our representative to this year’s pageant…”

“M-Ma’am I can—“ magpo-protesta pa sana si Klarrize sa professor naming may sira sa ulo pero pinutol niya ito at sinabing…

“I won’t take no for an answer Ms. Buentaje. Isa pa, you’ll definitely gain something in return if you did well and got the crown.” Sabi niya at parang naging interesado naman ako roon. Just curious, what can I gain by joining that injudicious pageant?

“And what can we get if we agree being the representative of that carnival?” I asked what’s running on my mind. Parang nagulat pa ang professor naming sa adjective na ginamit ko sa pageant na tinutukoy niya but she chose not to mind it.

“I’ll be exempting the both of you for the finals. That is, if you got the crown.” Sagot niya sa akin. Sounds interesting…

“And what if we didn’t?” tanong kong muli.

“Then you’ll going to fail this class Mr. Perez.” She sneered at me na para bang nanalo na siya at nakuha niya ang gusto niya. Klarrize was about to say something, but damn that professor. She just shut her off again and said… “I told you, I’m not taking a ‘no’ for an answer.” Sagot niya and after a while ay tumingin sa klase, “Class dismissed.” Ganoon lang at umalis na siya. Napatingin ako sa katabi ko, she was looking at me with nervous in her eyes…

“Tell me this isn’t happening. Tell me I’m just dreaming.” Desperado niyang sabi sa akin.

“Well, let me tell you this...” Una kong sabi at saka hinaplos ang mukha niya katulad ng ginawa niya kanina. Surprise is evident in her face and I think I just get the result that I want. “You’re not in your freaking dreamland. What you heard and witnessed just a while ago was true.” And I took the space between us until I am just inches apart from her face. “You want some proof?”
