Mare ignored my question and launched a flame of shadow he made in his hand directly at us.
"Woah!” I said, dodging left, and Carlos dodging right.  It exploded on the ground at my feet.
"Take it easy there, you don't want to lose all that progress from anger management now do you?" I joked.
He threw another ball of shadow at me that I dodged by rolling to the side.
“When was the last target practice you’ve had?” I asked, getting up and running towards him, “I know a pretty good place for that if you wanna go sometime?”
I could see his anger intensifying and he floated up, out of reach, "If the location is somewhere near your face, I'd gladly like to practice my aim there."
“Where’s Kiara?  That is the only reason we’re here.” Carlos asked.
I looked at him with a straight face, seeming disappointed in him.
“HA!” Mare laughed, “You weren’t counting on me actually keeping my deal, were you?”
“Yeah, I can’t believe you thought she’d actually be here.” I agreed.
“So why’d we even come here?” Asked Carlos.
“Because Mare knows where she is, so we make him tell us.  Easy peasy!”
“You won’t make me answer to anything.  Sharp-Wings, attack!” Yelled Mare.
Carlos and I decided on a headstart when we heard the scraping of walls up above.  Behind Mare where another set of huge steel doors, where we went to escape.
“It’s impossible to outrun my Sharp-Wings, nevermind a whole horde of them.  But I'll wish you good luck anyways.” Mare called out behind us.
As Mare disappeared into the darkness above, Sharp-Wings came gliding down.  The Sharp-Wings had wings under their arms, but by looking at them you can tell they obviously can’t fly.  As we opened the doors and ran out, I heard Mare yell, “Ow!  You pathetic excuse for a species, watch where you’re gliding with those nails!”
Behind the doors was a skinny passage, with railings on each side just as the opposite side of the building.  Further on it split into two paths.  We ran as fast as we could hearing feet thudding behind us.  I looked to see them running after us.  It seemed like each Sharp-Wing had a different way of running.  The closest one to us was running on all fours.  Some were running like a regular human would.  I looked up and saw more gliding down from the top of the building we left.  And Mare was right, These things are too fast.  I slowed down so Carlos was in front of me and we stopped at the split path.  The Sharp-Wings were really close behind.  I watched Carlos go left without looking to see what it lead too, but I stayed behind.  The Sharp-Wings came at me full speed and I came up with an idea that I wasn’t entirely sure of.  I sliced at the ground, making a cut that separated the left path from the rest, then ran after Carlos.  The nearest Sharp-Wing was about 10 feet away from us when we neared the end of the path, which had nothing but a short fall into the green and purple goo below.
“Ugh,” Carlos said, out of breath already, “So this is the day I die.”
“Eh, I wouldn’t be saying that too soon.” I said back.
I sliced at the ground behind us and stopped and turned around.  Carlos did the same.  I had to kill two that made it across, but the rest followed the falling platform into the purple and green goo.  The goo ate through they're bodies at a single touch.
“Woah,” said Carlos,”That was actually...  Pretty smart.”
“Haha, I'm full of smart ideas.” I said confidently.
We heard a voice that sounded like it came from my right pocket.
“Great job, I'll bring you back and I'll find out where my really daughter is while you two rest.”
“Wha-” Carlos was about to say, but the landscape around us brightened up, and whiteness swallowed us both.  We were back in the lab in… A couple blinks of an eye.  Tom walked away from his computer and walked over to us as our eyes were adjusting.  Carlos and I stumbled out of our tubes.
“You'll get used to it.” Tom said.
“Umm,” Carlos said,”Sorry but, I think we should actually be heading back to our world before our parents come home.”
“Oh…” Said Tom, looking shocked and maybe even disappointed.
“Do we really have to go?” I sulked.
“Yeah, we can't be gone forever.” Carlos responded.
“Okay,” Tom said,”Tell no one of this, you never know who you can actually trust.  And your brothers right, whole your in your dimension, I'll try and find out how to bring you guys back here.”
We walked into our tubes and Tom to his keyboard.  He stared at the screen for a long while.
“Ummm… not sure how to bring you guys back…” He says.
“Wha?” Carlos began to complain, “but…”
“Oh…” I said.
I didn't really like the idea of being stuck in a lab forever either.
“Maybe…” Tom said with thought on his face,”Noooo, that can't be…”
He turned from his desk and walked over to Carlos.
“What are you doing?” Carlos said as Tom took a needle from inside his lab coat.
“Don't worry, nothing's in this…” Tom said, then stabbed his arm.  Before I could hear Carlos express any pain he disappeared.
“This is… Highly impossible.  Hm... Jem, your turn.”
“Wait, wha?” I said, eying the needle.
“Don't worry, it won't hurt.  Any small, concentrated sense of a nerve should wake you up, transferring you from this world to your own.”
He walked over to me and I decided to trust him.  I stuck out my arm and he impaled the needle into it.  I felt a sting that quickly went away, along with my ability to see.
