I was breathing heavily. What the hell was that? The dream that I thought was a good one had a wicked, twisted ending that no one would've been able to predict. I rubbed my palms together. I couldn't go back to sleep... I was too petrified to. I checked the clock. It read 2:19 AM. It was too early to go outside and take a walk to ease my mind, and I was too lazy to clamber out of bed and change clothes anyway. The only option was to sleep. I nibbled my nails anxiously.

It all seemed too real. Surely it was just a bad dream, right? I would probably have a good one this time. I tried reassuring myself as I laid my head gently on the soft pillow. As soon as my head came in contact with the silky surface, my eyes closed and my mind drifted into sleep.

I found myself in the same surreal meadow. I freaked out. I screamed out of panic, flailing my arms. I pinched myself multiple times, but I couldn't get myself to awaken. Tears dripped down from my eyes and I curled up on the swaying grass. I heard a demented voice echo in my ears, "Why'd you come back...? Perhaps you wanted to dance?" I shook my head viciously in response, scurrying away. "I have to run," I firmly told myself before sprinting in the direction of a forest.

This couldn't be happening. Why couldn't I wake up? I continued running, slowing down as soon as I entered the forest. I stopped a bit to catch my breath, leaning against a ragged tree trunk. My eyes roamed around before it settled on a rickety, old car. I didn't know what I was thinking when I slowly made my way to the broken-down car. It was rusty and it looked as if it hadn't been used in years and was abandoned here. My hand wrapped around the car handle and yanked the metal door open. Dust exploded in my face and I coughed before slipping into the seat, my hands resting on the leather steering wheel. I then closed the car door and found the car key inserted already into the keyhole.

I turned the key and the car roared to life. There was barely any gas, but I didn't care. I had to get as far away from there as I could. I drove speedily and quickly, breaking through the undergrowth and snapping the branches of trees along the way. The deeper I got, the foggier it became. The trees turned barer and barer until there wasn't a single lead in sight. The gnarly trunks had streaks of charcoal black on them, and the branches looked like a witch's wrinkled fingers.

I turned on the headlights, growing gradually nervous at the darkening surroundings. I looked back and forth, nearly tumbling out of my seat when I spotted a pair of gleaming eyes. I stepped on the breaks, screeching to a halt. I rubbed my eyes and craned my neck forward but was confused when there was nothing. I shook my head, cursing as I started up the engine once again. The car rumbled down a hill and I heard eerie sounds around me.

I heard thumps along the windows and suddenly, the headlights that had been working fine earlier blinked off. "What the hell!" I grunted. This was a dream, so it would be fine if I got terrified or hurt... Wounds wouldn't transfer to the reality, right? I massaged my temples with my index fingers before slowing the car to a gradual stop. I slumped down in my seat. I wasn't in the mood for cliché horror scenes, nor was I in the mood to follow the typical horror movie stupid acts and check what's outside. "I just wanna wake up."

"Well, you can't."

A voice murmured behind me.

I whipped around but no one was there. Am I hallucinating? I looked around the insides of the car, fumbling with my hands. My hands found its way to a convenient flashlight, which turned on as soon as I touched it. "Freaky," I noted to myself.

Then I shined the light to the windows, and there were two bloody handprints with a face staring back at me.

Except that the face wasn't outside the window. It was inside.

And that face wasn't any face. It was the face of the man that had danced with me before.

I screamed.

Everything went black as he lunged at me.

...

And I never woke up.
