As soon as I stepped onto the return train after dropping Yuzuru off at his cram school stop, my phone buzzed. I flipped it open to see another text from him.

[yellow heart]?

I chuckled. My phone was pretty old, so it sent me text messages as emails, and translated most emoji into text descriptions. It was annoying, but definitely made Yuzuru's messages a lot funnier. I typed back.

That one's YOUR favorite. ;)

I grabbed onto the overhead bar as the train started moving. My phone buzzed again, and this time it was a string of nearly nonsensical text.

>.<[angry face with horns][face with steam from nose][middle finger][rainbow][middle finger][angry face]

Well, that was different, though I pretty much got the general idea. I just texted him another heart in reply.

A few seconds later, another flurry of nonsense.

[fish][hot beverage][snowflake][strawberry][pile of poo][man student]

And another.

[Santa Claus][chicken][full moon];)[green heart]

I had to clap a hand over my mouth in order to keep from startling the other passengers in the car with a wail of laughter. Yuzuru must have just discovered the emoji function on his phone. Well, either that or he was trying to tell me what he wanted for Christmas, though the chicken and poop symbols made that unlikely. At least, I hoped so.

He continued to send me texts like that, one after the other, until I was pretty sure he intended to try out every single symbol his phone had. I finally messaged him back.

Aren't you supposed to be paying attention to cram class?

His reply:

[face with rolling eyes][middle finger][middle finger]

[zzz]

I closed my phone, shaking because I was laughing so hard. Then I eyed the phone thoughtfully.

I got off the train at the Sakuragichou station and headed for the mobile phone retailer two streets over. An electronic bell went off when I entered, and several retail clerks called out greetings. I walked over to the closest guy. "I'd like to upgrade my phone," I said, holding mine out.

His eyes widened as he took it from me. "Yeah, I can see why," he said, flipping it open. "I haven't seen a phone like this since I was in junior high. You really like getting your money's worth, huh?"

I shrugged. "It still works fine, but I'd like something that can display emoji. Maybe something with a color screen? This one only displays color for photos."

He looked at me with pity. "Maybe a color screen, he says..." Then he sighed and closed his hand around my phone. "Well, every phone has a color screen now. You can take your pick."

I looked at the array of devices in the glass case he'd indicated, but there were so many I didn't even know where to start. "Um..."

"Do you know what kinds of phones your friends and family use? That might give you an idea of what you'd like."

"My boyfriend has an iPhone, do you have something like that?" I felt foolish that I didn't know more about this stuff. Natsuki and Shino had been teasing me about my phone for years, but I hadn't seen a reason to buy a new one when the old one worked just fine. Until Yuzuru, anyhow.

"Your boyfriend, huh?" The guy raised an eyebrow and scanned me up and down, presumably trying to decide if I looked like the kind of high school boy who would have a boyfriend. I don't know what conclusion he came to, because he ended up in a shrug. "That's cool, man. We've got iPhones over here."
