Chasing Ghosts [Attack on Titan](Wattys 2014 Winner)

This is a random idea I got while watching SNK episode 9

This happens during the fall of wall Trost.

I heard him mutter my name when I cut the blades across its neck. The beast released the trainee and I landed on a roof across from them. I stood looking over the city of Trost, feeling nothing in my bones. It was Maria all over again, people screaming and
crying... death on every corner. Yet, I could do nothing to save any of us. Any of them. I was one of the roofs, my steel eyes glazed over. It felt like the day i'd Lost her... yet I hadn't seen the Armored Titan... Yet. I clenched my hands tighter around the handle of my blade gritting my teeth at the thought of that massive beast. I would be the one to kill it, the one to rip its neck out and stab its beady black eyes. The sound of someone landing beside me caught my attention and I looked up. Petra stood before me with two other soldiers behind her. "The reinforcements have arrived Sir." I nodded. My voice stiff and my face cold. "Good, you three take the one on the right... I'll take those two." I gestured my blade over to the nasty creatures not four buildings away. Petra blinked. "Wait!" She cried. It was to late, I jumped from the building and towards the waiting pray.

I was still hurting, even after five years. A broken heart never mends. I felt rage streaming though my blood as I looked at the ugly creatures. Without hesitation I launched myself at the first cutting my blades deep into its soulless black eyes. The creature screeched as I cut open its neck. Flinging myself upward in a way only she'd taught me how to do. I zipped down on the next landing on its head after poking out this ones eyes as well. "Hold still." I snarled. Knowing it couldn't understand me. Then I cut down its neck and jumped to the roof across from the body's. I took one look at my dirty hands and let out a Tsk of disapproval.

My eyes went to the trainee that had been half eaten by the titan monster. I landed beside Petra who was looking down at him. "Your ok." She said quietly. I blinked landing and kneeling down beside them. "P-Please.... tell me I made a difference." He looked at me. I didn't know this mans name, but he had dusty blond hair and green eyes. "You fought hard solider, remember that. I swear to you, I'll kill every last titan here." I said. He smiled, blood dribbling from his mouth and middle. "I-I'm glad..." then he closed his eyes and didn't move. I dropped his hand as Petra wiped tears from her eyes. Its not fair, that these Titans ruled this world. We where no longer the alpha dogs like the humans used to be, after the titans showed up... the world was flipped upside down.

I didn't know why we had to die, what even was death. "Did he hear me?" I asked the auburn haired girl. She nodded. "I think so, look at his peaceful face." She said quietly. I frowned at myself and got to my feet. I only wish I could have seen that look on her face before I lost her...I shook the thought from my head. Refusing to let myself feel again, I'd rather feel nothing then sadness. I'd rather be death then cry. Erwin trotted up beside him and yelled. "We are retreating." he said. I scowled. "Why? You know that the war isn't over here." I snapped back. Erwin looked down at me. "There are hundreds on the way down here, we go. Now"

This was the first of many moments when I questioned Erwins elegance's, he knew that I could take them no problem... but he still ordered us to leave.
