Trixie looked from left to right and stared over at the bar.
"Oh wow! I see a fresh new face" She said excitedly. I looked down trying to keep out of site. It's not me. It's not me.
"Hey you!" She shouted. Don't look up or she will think you and volunteering yourself to go up there.
"Uh hello?" She said again. I felt a bump on my left arm and turned. It was an older gentleman. He wore a straw hat and looked like a farmer. He had nudged me harshly. He smiled and flashed a gummy smile.
"She talkin to ya!" He shouted pointing to the stage where Trixie was. If I hadn't stuck out like a sore thumb earlier, I did now with this idiot blowing my cover. I looked up and looked back over to the stage.
"There she is. Finally. Did you receive my invitation by owl? What took you so long?" She said in to the microphone. I didn't answer. I just smiled awkwardly like an idiot. The room laughed at me as I sat there like I was from another planet. They knew I wasn't country. The look gave it away. Maybe I should have come to the club in denim or some cowboy boots.
"Get yourself up here pretty thing" Said Trixie again. I hesitated for a moment. I slowly slid off the bar stool and walked at a slow pace towards the stage. Eyes burning in to me. I heard slight laughter and mutters from people around me. I looked to my left as I walked. A young girl was whispering to her boyfriend as they stared at me. What have I done.
"Oh! She a city chick!" Trixie said over the mic. My cheeks turned red as I got to the bottom of the steps to the stage. I climbed up them and joined Trixie on to the stage. She was so tall as I stood next to her.
"I like the dress. You meeting Mr Grey after this show?" She teased. The audience burst out laughing. I fake smiled and looked down , twiddling my thumbs nervously. I felt her hand on my shoulder. I turned to look up at her. Her blue eyes looking down at me. Her glittery eyes shimmering in the spotlight."What is your name?" She asked sweetly.
"(Y/N)" I mumbled. She smiled and turned to face the crowd.
"Tonight I am not going to roast this girl. The crowd is" She started. Fuck. What a way to switch things up. I breathed in and exhaled sharply. This was such a stupid stupid idea. The crowd went wild and clapped. Trixie positioned herself behind me and pushed me forward a little in to the limelight making me stumble a little. I saw the same person who had handed Trixie the mic start maneuvering through the crowd with another microphone. He handed it to someone. I couldn't see as the stage lights were so bright. The audience looked like black blurs. Black silhouettes looking to the stage.
"I got one" Said a deep voice over the microphone. Great
"If ugliness was a crime, you'd get the electric chair." It shouted. The room collapsed with laughter. I bit my lip and cringed. This is horrible . What a way to roll out the welcome wagon. Trixie cackled over the microphone loudly. She had a very loud, contagious laugh.
"Next one" Trixie said again over the microphone. Please no
"You are so fat, when God said "Let there be light," he asked you to move out of the way". The room again just burst with laughter. Trixie was stood at the side of me. Her smile began to fall as she looked out to the crowd.
"I'd like to kick you in the teeth, but why should I improve your looks?"
"How did you get here? Did someone leave your cage open?"
"I don't have a joke but I just wanna say. Just kill yourself." Said another voice. The room was in hysterics. I inhaled sharply. Really?
"Ok guys let's stop there" Trixie butted in. She looked over to me, she looked hurt for me. My heart raced , my body twitched with anxiety and fear as the crowd laughed at me. I had never been roasted before and I don't ever want it to happen again. I looked at the floor. I felt her hand on my shoulder once more. I felt comforted. I looked up at her. Her eyes were glazed. I think she realized what a bad idea she had made. But the damage was already done. She moved the microphone from her mouth and whispered in my ear.
"I am so sorry " She whispered. I turned on my heels and jumped off the stage , not using the steps and pushed my way past the laughing crowds. I headed straight for the exit and out to the front of the club. I held back my tears as I stomped my heels in to the pavement and hid around the side of the club. I pressed my back up against the wall and began to breathe heavily. How the hell did that happen ? I felt mocked , hurt and very overwhelmed with being on that stage and being spoken to like that. Not ever experiencing anything like that in my life or ever being intimidated. I wiped my eyes with my hand. A quiet voice came from the side of me.
"(Y/N)?" I heard. I turned quickly to look where the voice was coming from. Trixie was stood just at the corner of the club , just a few meters away from me.
"Yes?" I said trying to look like I wasn't crying. I walked closer to her. It was dark but I could just make out her big , blonde hair.
"I am so sorry I did not expect that to happen. I have never had the crowd roast someone before. It was a bad idea. A shitty idea" She said apologetically. I sighed.
"It's ok. "I lied.
"Your a drag queen, isn't that what you do?" I said a little harsh. Trixie bit her lip. It was the truth right?
"Yes but not to that extent" She said. I shrugged my shoulders.
"Look its over and done with now. I best be getting home" I said trying to push passed her. She didn't know me and I didn't know her so it was best to just leave. She put her hand out and stopped me.
"Can I make it up to you? Can I by you a drink ? "She asked. I smirked a little.
"I don't think a drink is going to cure my feelings" I said truthfully trying to nudge past her again. She frowned and I could see the sincere look of apology on her face. She looked worried and upset for me.
"How about two?" She joked. I giggled slightly. She was trying. Id give her that. I guess I could accept her offer.
"Ok . Two drinks " I said with a smile. Her pink lips turned in to a bright smile.
"Awesome. Now let's get inside." She said sweetly. I followed at the side of her to the entrance of the club. I couldn't hear any music playing or any noise from inside.
"Did you stop your show for me?" I asked curiously. Trixie turned to me.
"Well yeah , I couldn't leave you upset like that". I suddenly felt myself melt. What a nice thing to do. Maybe she was genuinely sorry for doing that. She opened up the doors of the club and we walked back inside.
