The calm before the storm

They say time heals all wounds. That's one of the funniest things I've ever heard. The person who said that must have never had a wound, and I don't mean physical, but emotional. How naive can you be to say that? Time heals no wounds, time just makes them older, and sometimes, they just keep growing...
It's been three years since Derek died, and I remember him with a smile on my face, bittersweet, but genuine. Of course Nathan knows this, of course he knows I still have the framed-post it note somewhere over the attic, of course he knows that same scrub cap I wear everyday for surgery was once Derek's. But he also understands that feeling. He was the person I loved the most, and now he is no more no less than a group of happy memories. I remember him gracefully. And I'm sure Derek isn't mad about it. He knows I found happiness, and he's glad I did. And that's the way I will continue to remember him. It was a little weird to carry more children, but I didn't complain. I had found joy in every action I made. The satisfaction of taking big steps was the same as the one little actions brought me. I had asked Kepner to plan our wedding, I told her to make it small, nothing too extravagant. After all, my first marriage was based on a post it note...
-Nathan, today I have the ultrasound at OB, will you come with me?
-Of course, I'll go with you. After that we could go have dinner at a restaurant. What do you say?
-Perfect! I can ask Amelia to take care of the kids. Nathan, before you go, I want to talk about something
-What is it?
-Two things actually: one, would you consider selling your house? I mean, you are all moved-in, we are living together so your house is like abandoned.
-Sure, I am contacting a realtor right away.
-Ok, two: Tomorrow will be three years since Derek passed away. The kids and I always go to his grave so that they can talk to him. Is it ok for you?
-You shouldn't even ask. Mer, of course it is fine. I can drive you if you want to...
-Thank you Nathan. See you later.
Just as I told you, he knows what it's like to lose the person you love the most. I didn't need to explain myself to him. I got ready for the next surgery, a very important one. Not because of its riskiness, but because it would be my last one in a long time. See, my bump already showed, and a lot (I was 7 months pregnant), so I had to stop working for at least another good six months.
After surgery, I scrubbed out, and went to the lobby to meet Nathan. We went to OB/GYN, and they called us for the ultrasound, we were going to find out the sex of the baby. We wanted to wait, but now was the time.
-Look, one toe. Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Toes totally normal!-Addison said.
-Eleven!-I said- I told you Nathan, our baby is an alien.
-Umm Meredith that's not a toe-Addison said.- You're having a boy! Congratulations!
-A little boy! Oh my god, I'm so happy! Mer, we are having a boy!
I couldn't say anything. I was in tears of gratitude.
We got out of there and went home to get ready for dinner. I was gonna go with a pair of black pants, high heels and a blouse. But as soon as I saw Nathan in his tuxedo I let go a little laugh and said:
-Well, aren't you a little overdressed?
-Hey I'm taking out a beautiful woman, this is necessary.
-But it's actually not when you are as handsome as Nathan Riggs-I said.-should I change into a dress?
-You are ok. Believe me, you are more than ok...
-Seriously, if you are going out like that I'm changing.
-Ok, maybe this is a little over the top. I'll change.
When he was ready, we entered the car and drove to the restaurant.
When we went inside, there was no one. There was a table in the middle of the restaurant, all full of candles and rose petals. I wasn't the corny type, but I had to admit this was so sweet...
-What is all this?- I asked.
-A lovely night out for a lovely woman- he said.
-Ok I'm dying, this is too sweet. Thank you Nathan
-You deserve it. Every moment of it.
-I love you
-I love you too
We had dinner, and we arrived home. I threw my purse on the couch and took off my shoes. Nathan came closer to me and grabbed my lower waist. He kissed me softly, being totally careful with my bump. He lifted me and took me to bed, because my feet were really swollen. As soon as I felt the silky sheets, I fell asleep. Because tomorrow, tomorrow would be... intense.
