Elektra's POV

"Her mate." My eyes widen in shock. "I killed her mate."

My body moved of its own accord, pushing Sarah way from me, her hands losing their grip on my cheeks as her face takes on an expression of surprise. I turn my back to her and make my way behind the desk, getting some distance between us as I try to recover from the shock of her answer and the anger that followed.

I take a deep breath in and close my eyes, attempting to compose myself before addressing Sarah once more.

"Elektra?" Her voice held a tone of confusion and shock, as if she was completely caught off guard by my behaviour.

I turned to her then, knowing that there was anger in my eyes, anger at the laid back way she confessed to killing another being, as if it was an everyday occurrence. Sarah took a step back as she took in the change in my demeanour, most likely a subconscious move, however one that was not common in Alpha's, one that showed weakness, submission.

"What drove you to kill her mate?"

Sarah's brows furrowed in confusion, not only at the question but at the sudden change in her mate, that was seemingly triggered by the death of someone completely unrelated to her.

"Victoria and her mate, Phillip, attacked my pack three months ago. Victoria has tried to overthrow me in order to merge their pack with my own in hopes of becoming the strongest in America."

I listened intently, nodding my head along every so often, encouraging her to continue.

"We were expecting their attack, preparing defences and tactics, moving women and children to the pack house, positioning warriors throughout our territory... Though we were ready for the worst, Victoria had a trick up her sleeve that we did not take into account."

My eyes widen in realisation. The shifters that attacked us possessed a power that was unlike anything we had faced before, theirs was a power that surpassed even that of an Alpha.

"She made them stronger."

Sarah nodded. "Yes. It seems that Victoria had been searching for a particular potion, one which could give any who drank it the power of an Alpha."

She stopped speaking suddenly her eyes gaining a glazed look, as if she was reliving that very day.

"We were caught off guard, many fought to the best of their abilities however..." Her eyes shone bright with sadness, regret and even a hint of guilt. "...many died that night."

As an Alpha, each pack member is an extent of their family...to watch them die is to feel the pain of losing a sibling or a father. I cannot imagine the pain she must have felt.

"There was no way of stopping them and they were getting closer and closer to the pack house so I did what I had to. I knew I could not take on Victoria, for her power is ancient and limitless, so I went after the only weakness I knew she possessed...her mate."

My anger subsided with every word she spoke, as her pain became more and more apparent and the powerful Alpha I first met transformed into a normal 25 year old haunted by her past.

I moved around the desk and approached Sarah, who was still too focused on her memories to notice me. Without hesitation I wrapped my arms around her waist and nuzzled my face into her neck, inhaling deeply, overwhelmed by the sense of peace that took over me upon being engulfed by her scent.
