Ch. 6 Forward or Back?

POV Leila

I could not believe myself. I thought I was this unbelievably strong girl, who was incapable of crying. Never letting a tear fall or showing a weak side. When Trace had shot me (he said it was an accident, I'm still not sure if I believe him) in my thigh when I was thirteen, I just gritted my teeth, swore a few, and endured the terrible pain. I wondered when my thigh healed why I didn't cry. I thought something must have been wrong with me. I felt like I should cry, but I couldn't. I prided myself that I didn't cry and built on that pride. I believed I was an amazingly strong girl.

Yet, I was here. Crying my eyes out. Into Trace's shirt. Like a little girl searching for warmth.

I didn't know what emotion brought on my tears. I couldn't say what I was feeling at the moment. I didn't know why I was crying in the first place. I wanted to stop the tears desperately, but they just kept on falling. Where did all these tears come from?

"I-i...," Trace murmured to me, snapping me out of my depressing spiral of tears. I took a deep breath to try and calm myself. "I'm sorry, Leila. Please don't cry anymore. I didn't...I didn't realized how trapped you felt in here. It was foolish of me to think that you could be happy living like this," Trace choked out, he sounded almost heartbroken. He was obviously having a hard time saying this. We were never ones for opening up our feelings and thoughts. Trace's comforting hand came to rest on my head as his other arm held him to me by wrapping around my waist.

Trapped. That was why I cried. I was trapped in my home, ever yearning to escape, but fearing the consequences if I did. I had to face it: I was a baby. I had absolutely no experience with anyone other than Trace and he wasn't exactly normal. In the outside world, I was a simple infant, curious and frightened of everything I didn't know about.

I cried because I was going to be set free. After ten or so years in the shadows, I was going to see the light. I had grown used to the dark. Yes, I would have loved to go outside and I was restless often, but I adapted. I forced myself to be content in the hole I lived in for Trace's sake. I would do anything for his sake. I didn't hate him for shutting me up for so many years. But now he was setting me free and I couldn't believe it.

"Thank you," I whispered into his tear-streaked shirt. I looked up into Trace's startling blue eyes. He was sad. My hand rested on his cheek and his eyes widened in response. "Don't be sad. Be happy for me," I said. I gave him a small smile. I was happy that my little episode had ended.

Trace gave me the same smile in return. His eyes lightened a shade. "Okay. Are you excited?" His eyes deepened again when I shook my head. "Not at the moment. I'm still kind of in shock, but I will be soon. Count on it," I gave him a comforting wink. Trace opened his mouth. Before he could apologize to me for locking me up again, I placed a hand across his mouth. "Shh... I can't forgive you, because I never blamed or hated you for this Trace. I'm just happy now I can, you know, go outside...and see what everything is like. TV doesn't cover everything."

"Okay, then. I guess I'll have to accept that, right?" I nodded quickly at his question. "So...do you like it in my lap?" I turned a fiery red, and looked down to confirm that I indeed was in his lap. I gave him a flirtatious smile that made his eyes start changing a different color. "Well...," I began. I took my elbow and started leaning it into his groin. Trace bit his lip, but he definitely was not into BDSM, so it was out of pain without pleasure. "I like it a lot."
