Chapter 19: Can You Take The Truth?
Jay obviously wasn't expecting my hug and neither was I. It took him only a moment though to wrap his arms around me. "You're welcome," he murmured softly. His voice was thick with some emotion.
I let my arms drop and stepped back. Or tried to. Jay seemed oblivious that I stopped hugging him and he continued to hold me tightly. "Umm...Jay?" I awkwardly muttered. He was taking way too much enjoyment out of a simple hug. Well, it was the only...affection I had ever shown him, so I guess that was enough reason to celebrate for him.
When the vampire realized my arms were no longer around him, he quickly released me, stammering out apologies. He sounded like a teenage boy who just unintentionally insulted the girl of his dreams. Girl of his dreams... No, I refused to accept Jay's annoying attraction to me. I gave him a small, tight smile to make him feel a bit better. Wow I was seriously the Ms. Congeniality version of my usual self. Just ask me what I think of world hunger.
"I'm glad you like the room," Jay said awkwardly.
"Me too," I agreed without thinking. Then I realized how stupid that sounded. "I mean I really like it. I can't think of anything better. It'll make the stay here more bearable." The last part accidentally slipped out. Oh the bitch in me was coming back. Jay kept a poker face on, but I saw his lower lip tightened. I wasn't going to take back my words or say sorry, though.
Jay's face suddenly lit up. "Oh! I have one more surprise for you. I think you might like this better than your room." I cocked my head in question. I was already pretty damn excited over my room. What could be better than this?
"Close your eyes and promise to keep them closed," Jay ordered.
"But Ja--"
"Close 'em! Or you won't get your next surprise." I glared at him before walking over to a corner of the room. Jay was looking at me strangely when I turned around.
"What?" I barked. I was surprised at my tone. I could be so freaking bipolar.
"Why did you walk over there?"
"So nothing sneaks up on me." I said it as if it were the most natural thing in the world. I wasn't going to let my guard down ever in this house.
Jay rolled his eyes, as if what I did was ridiculous. When he gets jumped for not protecting his back, yeah...he will remember this moment and I'll laugh over his remains. "Just close your eyes." Taking my blades out of my hair, and holding them ready, I did as I was told.
I strained smell and hearing, but picked up nothing for a few seconds. I heard their soft steps firsts. There were a lot of them, but I still was guessing. I barely heard the heavy panting next. I really he didn't think a shifter was a gift. My body automatically tensed.
Then an all too familiar smell drifted to me. A moment later something cold and wet was pressing against my leg. "You can open your eyes now," Jay said sweetly.
My eyes first landed on an adult brown and black adult German Shepherd that was busy sniffing up and down my leg. Then they bounced to two other frightening dogs. Well, frightening to a human. Not me. A tall, black, sleek Doberman Pincher stood a few feet away from Jay. Its brown eyes stared holes into me. Next to it sat a happy-looking Rottweiler. I guess the German Shepherd was the only one brave enough to meet me.
"You got me dogs?" I asked, astounded. I tenderly and slowly started petting the German Shepherd. He gave my hand a tentative lick that made me smile.
Jay shifted from one foot to another. Jesus, he was the most human-acting vampire I knew. Most tried to stay calm, cool, and collected. Jay? He could be more awkward than a teenage boy. 'Are you sure it's not because of you? Maybe you just make him awkward since he likes you,' the voice inputted smugly. I shook my head. It was not going to ruin this moment.

Trust a Vampire? You've gotta be kidding me.
VampireI killed the only man I knew and loved. Well shit. Will I let the pain consume me or will I find light in my darkened days. Or will I die from too much exposure of Jay's cocky, arrogant, ignorant, unhelpful, snobby voice. I don't know, but probably...
