Chapter 15: Deal with the Devil
I finally snapped out of the shock and gathered enough wits to run after Leila, but she had already had at least ten few minutes head start by now. That was a problem with being a vampire, you tended to lose track or just ignore time when you had forever. Standing still for what seemed like a few minutes, could be hours if I wasn't careful.
I was out the door in less than a second, sniffing the air for her scent. How could I have said such a thing to her! This was a disaster! A disaster that I had to fix before it was too late.
Sniffing the air frantically, I started running in circles. I couldn't catch her scent. I couldn't focus with such panic in me. I wasn't going to do anything done like this. Forcing myself to stop, I closed my eyes, counted to ten, and took a deep breath like a human with anger problems. It didn't help much. Hell was running through my mind, but I managed to stop pacing in a random manner.
I took a deep breath and caught Leila's scent. It was heading around the back of my house and I followed after it. Out of the top of my eye, I saw the graying sky. Shit, if it rained I was so screwed. I had a feeling Leila would do her best to hide herself from me, so it would be hard enough now. If I lost her now, I had the unfortunate hunch that I wouldn't be able to find her again.
I rushed into the forest that was the background of my home, still trailing her scent. It constantly doubled back, feigned to the left and right, and zigzagged all over the place. I nearly lost her once or twice by her more clever altercations of path, especially when she once doubled back to the same spot about five times from different directions. But I was an excellent tracker. Surely, not the best, but I was good enough for the chase. Blaze was a much better tracker than me, and I sincerely wished I had him by my side.
By her repeated diversions, I would have thought I'd have caught up with her by now, but she was still out of sight and hearing. I probably couldn't hear her because of the clamorous way I was stampeding through the forest, but I was as calm as I could get now. Desperation had now reached a whole new level. I was seriously worried and guilty about Leila and what I said to her. Only part of it was because I could be blamed with the end of the world. But, eh.. I guess that's pretty bad, too.
I dodged tree roots and branches, leaped over bushes, swung from tree to tree. My horror increased with each movement I made, each breath I breathed, everything my eyes laid on that was not Leila. "Leila!" I roared. "LEILA!" Suddenly, I heard the sound of rushing water pounding in my ear drums. Oh no. Oh no no no no. A sinking feeling settled in my gut. It was that feeling that when you know you've really fucked up and you were about to suck consequences' dick.
Abruptly, the scent I had been following cut off. She must have turned back again. I was a fraction of a bit calmer when I stopped heading towards the I whipped around and headed for the last place her scent had split. I headed towards the other way, my fear increasing as I began heading towards the water again.
All to soon, I arrived at the place I dreaded she'd come to since I heard the water. The river.
I should have known she would come here. It was the only way she could have lost me. She obviously knew this too. Her scent had led me straight to it. I stopped right beside the river bank. You're an idiot if you think I couldn't walk across the running water. I was just too hysteric to even think about where to go. There was no where for me to go! She was gone, I had pushed her away, and it was all my fucking fault.
I flashed back and snapped the nearest tree in half. Her scent was completely gone. She'd dived in it and who knows how far along downstream she had gotten. In this forest it would be like finding a needle in a haystack. Leila could be miles away by now and I had no way to find her.
