Chapter 29: Dead and Gone

"When I said good morning, I was lying," my new favorite teacher drawled from his desk. I liked him. Well, I liked him as much as I could like anyone that I had a strong hatred for. The guy was so laidback with his feet propped up on his desk. Tsk, tsk, tsk very unteacherlike. His name was Mr. Rayne. I could tell the guy was a Pureblood. Kiziah really didn't like him.

"Because I'm assigning a project to you all. You will work in pairs." I looked at Kira and Jorgie. One of us would have to take one for the team. I wouldn't mind if I did the project by myself--that is, if I actually do it--but I didn't want to get paired up with some strange vampire. Mr. Rayne went on, "Before you start picking your partners, I want you guys to get to branch out more and quit being social rejects, so," he stopped. In a moment, there was a top hat on the desk, upside down. "Each person will draw a name out of this hat. Tammy, you're first. Read the name aloud." A brunette wearing high heels stood up and clicked her way to Rayne's desk. She stuck her hand in the hat and pulled out a little white slip.

"Nick," she said with a smile. Tammy ran over to some guy and high-fived him. One-by-one, the students walked up, took the little slip, and that student and the name they had drawn were taken out of the hat. I listened dimly for my name as I stared out of the window beside me into the forest.

"Leila." My head snapped up to glare at whoever said my name. It was practically a reflex. Some guy with brown hair and pale blond highlights was looking at me with a smile on his face. I grimaced as I heard the collective swears from male voices around the room. I cursed under my breath but everyone probably heard.

Amynta nudged my arm with her wet nose. The dogs were sitting behind Jorgie, Kira, and me. I patted her head before turning back to my forest.

The rest of the people picked their partners. Kira got some guy names Trent, and Jorgie got a girl named Jess.

"Okay, the bell will ring in about ten seconds now," Rayne informed. "Let me tell you now that most of you will probably have different seats. I'm too lazy to teach anything tomorrow, so you will just be getting to know your partner. I will see you guys tomorrow." He picked up a sports magazine and ignored us. Two seconds later the bell rang to end school and we all left. My dogs formed a protective barrier around me.

Kira, Jorgie, and I headed towards our dorm. We were talking about what the project could be since Rayne had decided to keep us in suspense. The entire way, everyone stared at me. Much more openly now. God, thank you Jay.

It was a relief when we entered our room. I had been looking at Jorgie as she blabbered on about something random, so I was confused when she suddenly gasped in midsentence. I followed her gaze at our room and groaned.

Jewelry most girls would probably commit mass murder for absolutely covered the coffee table in front of the couch. I looked disdainfully at the objects I knew Jay had placed. I walked over and started gathering them up.

Kiziah whistled behind me. "Wow. I'm pretty sure all that is more money than Bill Gates earned in his life," she commented. I ignored her.

I put some of the jewelry on Kiziah's head since I couldn't hold it all. We walked over to the trash can in the kitchen where I dumped the crap.

"What are you doing!" Jorgie exclaimed.

"What does it look like?" I replied shortly as I threw the last of the jewelry in the trash.
