Chapter 35: Jealous Much?

Trace POV

I don't think I had ever seen Leila that happy in her life. Not even when she was with her parents. There was nothing I loved more than the sweet sound of her laughter, her subtle smile that warmed my heart, and glistening twinkle in her eyes that radiated happiness.

They were the only things that kept me sane through the day. Now, it was late in the day and definitely time to get back. We had already gone through most of the rides and my self-control was about to snap.

All day I had to endure the leacherous eyes of human males rake their gazes over my mate. I forced myself to stay calm so Leila could enjoy her day. I kept as close to her as possible without overcrowding, so no daring men would mistake our relationship.

But I did have fun. It had been a long while since I had been to an amusement park. I think the last time was maybe half a century ago. My mother had taken me and Vadin to one. Being with Leila made it that much better.

I had never heard her laugh so loud and act so carefree. I saw a part of the old Leila come out today. The more innocent one that was replaced--no, just covered with a harder, more bitter shell that I spent so much time to chisel down.

And I learned two important things today. One bad, one good.

The good: I hadn't scarred Leila as much as I had thought. Leila had a soft spot for kids. After I found that out... I couldn't help, but think about our... future. A future I had to have if I was ever going to be happy in life.

And I had already put part of that future into plan. This was just the beginning. If everything went to my liking--actually, more like my hopes, then that future would be in my grasp. At the moment, it was only a dream. Everything rested on Leila's decision. I just wanted to give her some of the childhood she never had before she made that decision.

And then there was the bad part. The demon in Leila was getting stronger.

We were heading towards the ferris wheel when Leila abruptly succumbed into a fit of coughing. Immediately, she doubled over with the force of her coughing. She then groaned, clutching her forehead. Before I could do anything to help her, Leila escaped, hunched over, into the thick crowds.

I set out after her, angry at the speed I had to be at because of the humans around me. If my eyes weren't so keen, I could have easily lost Leila in seconds, but I managed to keep her in sight. Height was also on my side.

Leila cut out of the crowd, heading towards some probably a hairsbreadth from unsanitary restroom. I reached it a few seconds after Leila dashed inside. The male restroom was on the left and the female's was on the right.

I slightly propped the female restroom door open and called her name. No answer. I could hear heavy breathing, though. Leila's heavy breathing. A second later, I heard muffled coughing.

I was fully prepared to storm in there to help my mate, but that could absolutely ruin Leila's day.

"Leila!" I yelled again. Same result. A middle-aged brunette awkwardly tried to siddle beside me to go into the restroom. "'Scuse me, miss," I stopped. She looked at me curiously with grass-green eyes.

"Can I help you?" she asked politely.

"Yeah, my girlfriend is in there, and I don't think she's feeling well. Her name's Leila," I told the nice woman. "Can you go check on her for me?"

"Of course," she smiled warmly, and walked in. I listened from the outside.

I heard the click of her heels on the cement floor. "Hello? Are you Leila?" There was a pause. I didn't hear anything. "Are you all right? Your boyfriend is right outside the door. Do you need him?" Another pause. I'd bet my left arm Leila shook her head no. That put my teeth on edge. Why couldn't she ever run to me instead of away? "Are you sure?" the woman went on.
