Chapter 42- Matters Of The Heart Part 3

"Can you walk?" asked Daniel Bromley to Spider-Man. He and the team only responded by running while Bromley followed. They made it to another station as Bromley said, "We have to get out of the tunnels before they find us." Venus Deterzo questioned, "Us? Us? Why should we go anywhere with you?!" Bromley admitted, "You're right. I wouldn't either. They bought me all right but not with money." Nightingale asked gently, "What was it the High Evolutionary rewarded you?" He explained, "I'm one of the few resistance fighters who have to remember what this town was like before Bestials took over." Bromley took a deep breath as he continued, "I was 13 when we moved there and my parents opened up a green grocery. My brother knew how to get the best in the streets. Our happiness didn't last long. Neighborhood was then took over by hostile Bestials who taunted us for being human. Soon the High Evolutionary's troops overtook the city. Ripping entire families from their homes. Separating them. To those who survived only returned to find their homes gutted. I never saw my family again." Nightingale said, "That is a sad tale, but those with one do not betray their friendships." Bromley nodded, "Very true. But the day I was arrested, Sir Ram gave me this." It was a golden ring with a red jewel encrusted in it. My brother Durwood is alive and been slaving in the bowels of Wundagore Castle. Sir Ram promised me if I help trap you..." Venus finished, "He'll release your brother." Spider-Man asked, "And you believed him?" Bromley responded, "Durwood is all that I have left in my family. There was nothing I couldn't do to free him. I couldn't go through with it. And now..." Ricochet said, "And now it's time for us to get big brother out of here ourselves." Bromley grumbled, "Don't toy with me, Ricochet." Spider-Man replied, "You may not believe this Bromley, but I know what it feels like to be desperate for someone you love."

Later that night: Wundagore Castle...
Bromley warned, "This could be the most highly guarded place in the city." Spider-Man said, "Even the toughest security can slip up somewhere." Then he saw a truck saying "Fluff And Puff" as Spider-Man got an idea.

Spider-Man dressed up in the driver's clothes and descended to an orangutan Bestial security guard. He asked, "What happened to Louie?" Spider-Man lied, "Uh, his kid's getting married tonight." The guard let him pass as Louie, a sheep Bestial was entangled in webs with the cargo.

The rest of Team SVRN and Bromley were in a wheeled hamper full of clean clothes being pushed by Spider-Man. He spotted Lady Vermin with a couple squires as he thought, 'Uh, oh. Rodent alert.' Spider-Man walked naturally pass them but Lady Vermin took a whiff and turned to see the disguised web-slinger. "Spider-Man?" wondered Lady Vermin. She followed him and exclaimed, "It is you!" Spider-Man stopped in his tracks and she ordered, "Seize him!" Spider-Man quickly lied, "Uh, wait... I came to see you." Lady Vermin asked, "Me?" She walked over to him and smirked, "What're you doing here?" Lady Vermin gestured her squires away as Spider-Man kicked the hamper away and he continued, "Truth is, Lady Vermin... I can't seem to get you out of my mind." She smirked again, "So you thought you could sneak in here behind your kitty's back and surprise me."

While Spider-Man and Lady Vermin were talking, the basket made it to a staircase as Bromley and the rest of Team SVRN went downstairs. "I'm gonna slap Spidey till next week for that," gritted Venus.

Lady Vermin smiled, "That it?" Spider-Man complimented, "Beautiful and smart." She flirtatiously wrapped her arms around Spider-Man and added, "To think you didn't actually care~" Lady Vermin started kissing his masked cheek as Spider-Man thought, 'Spidey, don't you DARE be sick! And Venus is so gonna kill me!'

The four made it to the hydro-purification plant as several humanoid fish in six water tanks were being tortured to suck scum off of the castle's main water supply. Spider-Man quickly came downstairs as he stressed, "Guys, better make it snappy. Lady Vermin is only giving me fifteen minutes to make herself 'more comfortable'." Venus got mad and slapped him. Nightingale asked, "What is this place?" Bromley answered, "A purification plant. Sir Ram says it provides clean water to the castle and city. But I don't see Durwood." He looked around and saw his older brother grown up. Durwood took a taser staff from a deer Bestial and took over his shift of torturing the humanoid fish. "Get to work, slime suckers!" goaded Durwood. He suddenly saw his younger brother as the two hugged each other. "I knew you'd come, Danny!" smiled Durwood. Bromley asked, "You knew? You had that kind of faith?" Then Durwood smirked, "In the High Evolutionary. He's the one who told me." Bromley looked at him with shock and asked, "What?" Durwood replied, "He said you and spider friends would come for me, haha, and when he did I would get a promotion. Soon when you and Team SVRN are locked up, I'll run this whole place." Bromley gasped, "Durwood, I'm your brother." The man ignored him as the High Evolutionary appeared and said, "Team SVRN, nice of you to be so predictable." Venus said in shock, "This was another trap." The wall opened up as the High Evolutionary walked toward them and replied, "Surely you didn't think entrance to the castle was possible without my assistance? But you have consistently underestimated me, haven't you?" He raised his green glowing hand and added, "Perhaps you need a demonstration of how highly I've evolved!" He threw the team to the wall as Spider-Man asked, "What was that? I felt like I was clobbered by... nothing!" The High Evolutionary thundered, "You four have been a thorn in my side for far too long, SVRN! Helping the Rebels blowing my power plant, hindering my plans to control the symbiotes!" He threw them across the room again as Spider-Man and Venus saved Ricochet and Nightingale from getting into one of the water tanks. "How are we going to stop a guy who can smack us around with his mind?" asked Ricochet. The High Evolutionary blasted at them again as they scattered away.

Bromley was about to run to help them but Durwood stopped him and said, "Hold it, Danny boy! You're my ticket to the top!" Bromley glared at him as he punched him and ran upstairs.

Team SVRN tried to avoid the telekinetic blasts but they always managed to get hit. "Educating you four is indeed a pleasure!" smiled the High Evolutionary. "A pleasure tenfold that will last until tonight." He pushed Spider-Man to a laboratory where the opened walls were at.

Durwood caught up with his brother as he activated his electro staff and rushed toward him.

The High Evolutionary walked toward Spider-Man with his teammates trapped in place and levitating. "And now for the final demonstration," said the High Evolutionary as several machines showed up and blasted Spider-Man and he began to turn back into Man-Spider. Suddenly he realized that the rays were powered by sonics. With the transformation nearly in tow, he shouted, "Sonics on!" The sonics managed to destroy lab and machines and also disorient the High Evolutionary. That released Spider-Man's teammates as Man-Spider suddenly transformed back to himself. "How is your suit not wrecked this time?" asked Venus. Spider-Man answered, "A modification Mr. Fantastic did in order to keep the suit from breaking like last time." Then the four saw Bromley and Durwood fighting. "I used to beat you when we were kids!" boasted Durwood. Bromley reminded, "We aren't kids anymore!" He pushed his older brother into a tank where the humanoid fish pulled Durwood and fed on him. "Durwood!" shouted Bromley. Team SVRN went to him as Spider-Man said, "We gotta get out of here!" Bromley agreed as the five ran to escape.

When the five managed to get out of Wundagore Castle and into Counter-Vale, Bromley still couldn't believe his own brother would betray him. "Me own brother using me!" Spider-Man said, "I could say it runs in the family, but I'm not the kind of guy to bring up that kind of thing." Bromley disagreed, "I earned that one. I have to get back to the Rebels. They might be worried and they're all the family I have." Team SVRN nodded as Spider-Man added, "I know what you mean." Then the four teammates ran off as Bromley tossed the ring away and went on his way home.
