Chapter 3
May 10
Lexi’s POV
It’s been five long months since my parents’ death. Kayla and I struggled with the loss for the first two months but things were slowly starting to get better.
All my friends and neighbors were very supportive and loving, they helped me take care of Kayla while I went to school but eventually it all became too much and I had to drop out of my last year of high school and take online classes so that I had more time to spend with Kayla.
We were never a rich family but we were better off than most, considering my father single handedly financially provided for us, while my mother stayed home to raise Kayla and I.
I was surprised at how many things we received after our parents death, we got more stuffed animals than I cared to count, mostly for Kayla and we had a dinner made for us everyday for at least a month after the funeral, not to mention the countless bouquets of flowers we were given. I loved the flowers most, they reminded me of my mother, she loved to garden and always had fresh picked flowers sitting on the counter and they always smelled wonderful.
The most recent gift we received was from our elderly neighbor, Shelby. Shelby was a bit of a wild card, as long as you stayed on her good side she was just lovely, but once you got on her bad side, there was no returning, usually anyway. I was an exception, I managed to find myself on the dark side of Shelby after I accidently broke one of her pots when I was ten. Then last year, Kayla and I delivered some cookies to her for Christmas and Shelby was instantly won over by that little red head. We were of course a package deal, so eventually Shelby forgave me.
Shelby had been visiting us even more often, ever since our parents died. She was the one who had taken care of Kayla the most while I had tried to go to school, so we had grown closer over the past few months. Last week she came over with an envelope in her hand, she told us that they were tickets for a concert that was going on about 20 minutes away from us. She said they had originally been for her granddaugter for her birthday, but surprise surprise, the granddaughter had done something to anger Shelby. So here she was at our door with her granddaughters birthday gift, I had laughed when she told me the reason her granddaughter was being denied the gift and she gave me a gummy grin, I declined at first. I would certainly be upset if I was Shelby's granddaughter, but the woman is stubborn so I gave in and decided a little fun was exactly what we needed. According to Shelby and the tickets, the concert was in 3 days.
