Chapter 4
May 13
Kayla’s POV
“Today’s concert day sissy!” I squealed, jumping up and down on Lexi’s bed.
“Munchkin.” she giggled smiling up at me from under her pillow.
“Yes, Bunny?” I asked innocently.
“Do you even know who's playing?” she asked me.
“Hmm...No…Well, no… I mean yes! You said they’re a band, they play music and we get to go watch them perform!”
“Yes, that’s all 100% true.” she said smiling. She sat up lifted me in the air and spun me around. I screamed and she laughed. Her laugh was so like Mommy's but it was almost better because she glows when she laughs, when she;s happy. She set me back down and took me to the kitchen to make us pancakes with peanut butter, something that's always been my favorite.
“Okay Kayla are you ready to go to the concert?!” Lexi yelled from the bathroom.
“Yep! I’m in the leeving room! Hurrry up!”
“Okay, okay I’m comin, I’m comin” she said as she walked down the hall to me, while putting in her earrings.
“Lexi…you look BE-A-YOU-TEE-FUL!” I beamed at her.
Her long blonde hair was curled and hung down her back, she wore a fitting black skirt that went up to her mid-thigh and a pretty red shirt that showed her shoulders and hugged her chest and she wore plain black converse, just like mine. She was finally starting to glow like she used to.
“Thanks Munchkin, you don’t look too bad yourself. Whoever dressed you did a great job.” She said with a wink.
I giggled. “Thank you very, very much!”
“You are very, very welcome! Okay now remember, no disappearing on me at the concert, I would never find you, the stadium is going to be huge!"
"Okay."
"Promise?"
"Yes, yes! I promeese, can we please go now?"
She smiled and nodded her head as she took my hand and led me to the door "So you really think I look okay?” she asked.
“BE-A-YOU-TEE-FUL!”
She smiled at my response and shined a little brighter and I smiled too.
"Lexi!"
"Yes, Kayla?"
"When I'm older will I look like you?"
"When you're older you're going to be the prettiest girl in the world." I smiled at that and walked along as we walked out to the taxi.
LEXI'S POV
When we arrived at the concert there were already tons of people. Kayla looked up at me, suddenly nervous and a little scared so I picked her up and walked inside, going through security and getting our tickets checked.
I had never been to a concert before or this stadium so I had some trouble finding our seats and had to finally ask one of the employees if he could help me. I let him see our tickets and he took us to the third row from the front, we were dead center. Wow, these tickets must have cost a fortune, considering how many crazy fans there were and they were almost all girls.
Kayla and I took our seats on the long wood bench like the ones on baseball fields.
“You ready Kay?” I asked, trying hard to be heard over the already loud crowd.
“Huh?” she asked leaning closer.
“Are you excited?” I repeated into her ear.
“Oh! Yes! And we’re so close to the stage! It’s so essiting!” She gushed. “My first ever concert!”
“Mine too!” I said smiling at her.
Just then the speakers turned on and I heard a voice say “ARE YOU READY FOR ONE DIRECTION?!”
The crowd went wild and everyone stood up and started chanting One Direction. This startled Kayla and she hugged my side.
I laughed “It’s okay silly, here, stand up with me.” She was so little, so I just put her up on the bench to stand on and still she went up to only about my shoulders.
The voice spoke again and started counting down “5…4…3…2…1…” The crowd joined in and as they got to one, five boys rushed on stage, causing the crowd to go wild all over again. Kayla got scared again at this so I figured that if I stood behind her she might feel a little more comfortable.
I turn to ask the person directly behind Kayla if she would switch with me and I turn to see a very tall girl with long, sleek, black hair, menacing, dark, beady and strangely bird-like eyes. She was extremely beautiful, but she looked strangely…evil.
I always tried to remember to never judge a book by its cover but this girl seemed to radiate anger, and dressing in complete black didn’t help either. Her eyes seemed hungry and she reminded me of a vulture looking at its next meal, and she was staring right at the boys. It was quite unsettling but I tried to push all that to the back of my mind figuring every girl here was probably a little hungry for those boys, especially considering the way the crowd reacted when they came out. I even saw a couple girls burst into tears just at the sight of them, I guess they were all pretty adorable and sang incredibly well, and I’m a girl too, so I can understand why they would get emotional. Boys make girls crazy and well girls just make guys stupid.
At least this girl wasn’t crying… it took a minute to get her attention but when I finally did she agreed, by simply nodding her head, her eyes hardly leaving the stage as we switched.
I stood behind Kayla and she relaxed a little, so I grabbed her hands, held them over her head and swung them back and forth trying to get her to dance. She was young and their songs were pretty upbeat, so it didn’t take much encouragement to get her moving and I danced right along with her.
A couple songs into the concert, the girl I had switched with moved right in front of us, blocking our view, so I tapped her shoulder, completely unaware that this one little gesture could cause so much damage. “Hey would you-” I started to ask her but stopped as she spun around unnaturally fast and stood there with something I never expected to see, a gun pointed directly at Kayla.
In these kind of situations you dont think, you just kind of react and I reacted the only way I knew how to, I picked up Kayla, spun around, and covered her with my body, I didn’t even have time to put her down, or to scream or to think before it happened.
In those last seconds before I blacked out I only heard two things.
The deafening sound of close range gunfire and the sound of wings in the wind.
