Chapter 7
May 13
Zayn’s POV
Niall and I drove in silence all the way to the hospital, but I’m sure we both had a thousand thoughts going through our heads, at least I did.
My heart was beating at a million miles a minute as we walked/ half ran in after the two girls who were being led away on the stretchers, into the hospital.
They must have given some kind of sedative to the child because she was lying down with her eyes closed. We tried to follow them into the emergency room but were stopped by a nurse.
“I’m sorry, but you two have to stay out here while they operate on her.” She apologized, putting both her hands up to our chests, blocking our way.
“No! We need to be there with her!” Niall argued, pushing his way past the nurse.
“Niall, no.” I said, putting my hand on his shoulder. “We have to let them fix her”.
He turned back to look at me, put his head down in surrender and started walking down the hall to the waiting room as I followed after him.
We got to the waiting room and Niall sat down putting his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands. I sat down next to him, leaning back in the chair and interlocking my hands behind my head.
“She saved my life and I don’t even know her name.” I could tell he was crying, I’m surprised he hadn’t started sooner, but surprisingly, up to this point Niall had shown nothing but determination on his face. But now, looking up from his hands I could tell that he was scared and in pain. “How could this possibly happen?!” He cried, looking up at the ceiling and running his hands through his hair.
I didn’t know what to say to that, and he just shook his head, never once meeting my eyes, as he assumed his earlier position, hunching down and silently crying into his hands.
It wasn’t long before I could feel my own tears falling down, to be honest I’m surprised I didn’t break down right on stage, I probably would have if Niall hadn’t yelled my name, saving me from drowning in my own self-pity.
I saw the whole thing, I saw the girl take out the gun and point it at Niall and I didn’t even try to warn him. I should have seen it all coming before it even started, but I didn’t, I should have been able to stop it and now it’s all my fault that those two girls are in the operating rooms right now, and one of them could still die.
And her death would be all my fault.
I don’t even know how I had the strength to follow after Niall, I just wanted to crumple on the ground, go to sleep and never wake up. Maybe some part of me knew that I had to do something, that since I wasn’t able to prevent it, maybe I could at least save her.
So I just sat there, head against the wall, eyes closed, silently crying… hating myself.
Thirty minutes later I heard people talking, and getting closer. I recognized their voices. I opened my eyes and saw Paul, Liam, Louis and Harry. Louis was wrapped around Liam’s waist, hunched over like a little kid, and Harry was behind them, arms wrapped around himself, looking around nervously. Behind Harry, were three police officers and Paul was in front leading the way.
“Over there!” Liam yelled, pointing over to us.
At that Niall looked up from his hands, and Louis pulled away from Liam, standing up straight and wiping his eyes. His clueless childlike look was replace with sadness and pity as he looked up at Niall and I. I’m sure we both looked terrible, the tears hadn’t stopped flowing since they took away the girls into the operating room. Niall and I stood up and Louis and Liam ran to give us hugs. Louis ran up to Niall, and Liam ran up to me giving me a quick hug and stepping back.
