You've only seen the boy occasionally, but his usual friendly face was gone. He knew he was about to enter a maze that would be the rest of his life.
"You can't even help us?" He asked you in disbelief. There was sadness in his eyes. He trusted you with every inch of his heart when he met you, but now he saw you like every other person did in group A. You grew closer to Newt than anyone else. You really liked being around him. He was always seemingly happy.
"This is for the greater good, Newt," you repeated to him what Teresa would continually tell you.
"Greater good," he huffed, "I'd love to see how that turns out . . . You're treating us like lab rats!" He exclaimed. Your friends, Minho and Gally, nodded; they agreed with his statement.
If you could change it, you would. If you could stop WICKED from taking your friends, you would. As selfish as it sounded, you didn't want to be alone again. You only had Thomas and Teresa, but they were more into each other than anything else.
Seeing the pain in Newt's eyes broke you. You wanted nothing more than to protect him and everyone else, but you aren't able to.
"I'm so sorry," you said finally. You hope they noticed the genuine sadness in your voice.
"Sorry won't cut it, y/n." Whether or not he wanted to intentionally hurt you, you couldn't notice, it felt like sharp knives being jabbed into your heart.
"C'mon, Newt. You have to understand this isn't what we want," Thomas said from behind you. You turned to look at him and gave him a small smile. You looked back at Neat. You felt tears threatening to escape.
"Plea—Please understand," you whispered. You swallowed trying not to cry, but it was useless.
"All I know, is that you work for them. You were never a friend. You were never someone to genuinely like. That's all I know." He only stared at you.
"Newt, I'm here too," Thomas spoke once again.
"But I loved her! I loved her and she doesn't love me enough to help me," he was pleading now.
You stared at Newt in disbelief. He never mentioned love. He never once told you that he even felt anything towards you. It only made things harder.
"I—"
"Goodbye, Newt," Thomas said interrupting you. It was now that you could hear his own sadness. Thomas felt as sad as you did. He's known them as long as you have.
Thomas grabbed your wrist and pulled you away. You turned around to look at him once more.
"I'm so sorry," you whispered. You knew he couldn't hear you, but you desperately wish he'd forgive you.
He was about to leave and he was angry at you. He would live in the Maze hating you or so you thought. What you didn't know was that he would completely forget who you are. Not a trace of you would be left in his brain, and forgiveness would be even harder to attain.

The Maze Runner Imagines
FanfictionI've always loved writing, but I've always been horrible at making an entire story. Short imagines are definitely a great way of sharing my writing, and so that's why I do them! I absolutely love The Maze Runner trilogy. I hope you enjoy my imagine...
