I couldn't wait to go surfing the next day.
We lived close to the beach and I've always loved it ever since I was small. My mom told me I had a knack for it, and i guess she was right.
It's not as popular with my friends, girls around here don't normally surf.
I'm happy alone, sometimes I feel it's my only escape and recently I realised how much I needed it.
I loved it, the way the board moves with your body and the waves rippled over you.
I got up early that morning and made my way down to the beach.
~
The wind was vicious whipping stands of blonde hair across my face.
I leaned my board against the beach shack while I zipped up my wetsuit.
It was really early for me to be up.
The beach was deserted but I liked it that way.
I ran down the beach the waves curling closer towards me with every step.
I found myself ankle deep in icy water and started to run, diving head first into it.
I lingered beneath the water for a while forgetting the tears from last night.
I caught a few waves too lazy to do much more.
Up along the beach I saw a familiar yellow surfboard following by a gang of people dressed in wetsuits or shorts.
It was Jack and a few of his friends.
They were pretty good surfers, Carter won the finals last year in our division.
" HAZEL! UP HERE!" I heard my brother yelling and waving like crazy at me.
He was pretty crazy as far as brothers go.
I watched him run down to meet me in his boardies.
"I know you haven't been here long but can I please take your board for a while?"
He was making the ridiculous puppy face that stopped working a good ten years ago. I gave him a look, but started walking up with him.
" It's just for a new friend, he's never been surfing before"
I squinted up at the group of boys.
I could see Jack G, Carter, Matt and two others.
You must be joking.
Cameron stood shivering in his board shorts, he smiled when he saw me.
"You don't mind do you? It's me and Nashs first time"
I could just imagine my friends fangirling that Cameron was borrowing my surfboard.
"No problem"
I sit down in the sand watching the boys zip up each others wetsuits.
Nash looks doubtful and sits down not too far away from me.
~
" All the guys were telling me your really good at surfing?"
It took me a few seconds to realise he was talking to me.
"Oh me? Nah not really I just like the sea" I replied.
" C'mon like better than I'm gonna be?"
I laughed at him as he struggled getting up to follow the others. He had a twang to his accent, I liked it.
" You'll be fine go!"
He smiled at me before running down to the guys who were already in the water. I stretched my legs out letting myself dry in the sun.
I watched laughing at how ridiculous Nash and Cameron were flaying around in the water getting splashed by the other guys.
" CARTER STAAP"
All the guys joined in yelling at Carter, they were weird.
They swam in further gliding on their boards, followed less majestically with Cam and Nash trying to share my small yellow board.
My attention turned to a blurred figure half way down the beach.
I could just make out his head of dark hair and his tanned skinned before he turned and walked in the other direction.
