We all clambered into the boat struggling to inflate the lifejackets.

"There's no time to lose c'mon!" Cameron said helping us all into our seats.

Nash was attempting to turn on the boat, and we all sat fidgeting, fuelled by our adrenaline.

"We need to call 991" my mom said after a while.

"No! We can find him we don't need to, we will"

Elizabeth said angrily, we could barely hear her over the wind.

My mom put a hand on her leg, her face showed nothing but pity and remorse.

"We will" she repeated.

Just as she shouted, Nash fired up the engine making the entire boat shudder.

It could of been the vicious wind, or the waves beneath us but as we started gliding out into the sea I felt incredibly unsafe.

Cameron beside me was crying silently, his arms wrapped around Jack.

I sat there unable to cry, or even speak.

I was scanning the dark ocean with my eyes looking for any signs of the lime green surfboard I was so familiar with.

Even then I knew it was hopeless but I was determined to try.

"Over to the cliffs" I said.

The current was heading in that direction.

Nash began steering the boat towards the cliff, slowing down the engine.

I could feel the boat slowly drift towards the jagged rocks the dark sea hitting treacherously against the sides of our small, feeble boat.

There was still no sign of Hayes and I was beginning to loose hope.

This is all my fault I thought.

The boat began to sway in the strong waves, I was still scanning the sea in desperation.

I froze.

"Over there!" I screamed.

I stood up suddenly making the boat rock.

I caught a glimpse of a green surf board wedged into between two rocks. He must of tried to swim in there for for shelter.

"Hurry go" Elizabeth managed to whisper, I could tell she was too scared to say anything else.

Nash struggled to steer the boat closer to the rocks and Jack got up to help him fight the current and the monstrous waves that were splashing in on top of us.

We were so close, I couldn't look.

Nash leaned off the boat picked up the surfboard, broken into two pieces.

The sinister sea so rough seemed to suddenly become calm and it loomed beneath us like a bottomless pit.

I saw the look of horror on everyone's face.

It started to slowly sink in.

"HAYES" I yelled.

Nothing.

"HAYES, PLEASE!" I cried.

No one answered me but the wind, the echo of my voice lingering in the air.

The silence was brutal.

Cold, empty, cruel silence.

It confirmed our suspicions.

I fell to the floor, I wasn't able to breath, talk, cry.

Jack picked me up comforting me. Nash and Elizabeth were sat down beneath the steering wheel.

She was cradling Nash like a little boy, sheltering him from the light drizzle while he wept into her arms.

It was frightening to see Nash, a huge six foot tall boy, so small and broken.

Elizabeth wiped away her own stream of tears.

I would always admire and respect Elizabeth for her courage and how brave she was.

It broke my heart to see such lovely and generous people this way.

I wanted to get sick.

It was all my fault, I could of stopped this.

He's gone.

Hayes is dead. My truly best friend- dead.

I couldn't believe what had happened, it was torture.

At that moment sitting down trembling in the cramped speed boat I realised I loved him.

I loved Hayes Grier, I loved him. And now it was too late.
