I screamed with the pain thrashing on the floor.

He kicked, punched, slapped my fragile body. Each hit my body tensed more.

Moaning in pain, fighting back tears.

" Shut up, you worthless piece of trash" he struck again, blood splattered on my skin, so pale beneath the harsh light.

I screamed in agony, crying for help, trying to form words but nothing came out. Nobody helped me. I was plunging into the darkness his arm wrapped tightly around me. No escape. I was falling faster I stretched my hands, clawing at the walls.

I was screaming but no sound was coming out all I could see was my dad's face shouting things at me but I couldn't make out what he was saying.

It got darker still and I couldn't take the pain anymore.

Then it went completely black.

~

I woke suddenly, gasping my face damp with sweat.

I quickly checked my body for new bruises or marks.

Just a nightmare.

Luckily I hadn't woken either of the boys up, normally I screamed and moved in my sleep.

Jack was snuggled into me and the two of them had their legs wrapped around me like koala bears.

Cute. I lifted their legs off me and moved Jack so that he fell on top of Jack G and cuddled in towards him.

I went upstairs to shower, relaxing under the hot water.

My night terrors were normally awful, sometimes I'd sleep walk and wake up not knowing where I am.

Jack would find me crying and carry me back to bed.

Jack Gilinsky was the only person we ever told. We trusted him like he was our brother.

He knew that Dad was abusing me and was always there to talk to, he would always beg us to let him tell his parents so they could get us help.

But we never let him, too afraid of what might happen to us if Dad found out.

Gilinsky stayed the night a lot, keeping us company and helped Jack whenever I had my night terrors.

~

I got out of the shower dressing quickly for school.

Yoga pants with a white knitted sweater and white nikes.

I blow dried my hair leaving it down behind my shoulders.

I put on some mascara not bothering with anything else, I glanced in the mirror and ran down to the kitchen.

The two Jacks were attempting to make breakfast cracking eggs in a bowl.

I sat down in a chair watching the two of them leaning over the bowl trying to scoop out the eggshells.

I pulled out my phone seeing the calls and messages from my dad that I had missed the night before.

He was always careful with what he texted in case we used it against him.

'Away with buisness for three days'

'Why aren't you answering my calls'

I texted him back telling him my phone was dead and that I'd see him in a few days.

It was quarter to nine. I grabbed an apple and found my school bag under the table.

The two boys had abandoned the eggs and were not grabbing pop tarts from the toaster.

" Penny boards?"

The three of us each took a board from the cloak room and hurried out the door.

~

I met Hayes at the back entrance like we had planned.

He was wearing a black beanie hat and a vans t-shirt, looking pretty tired.

" Hazel you gotta help me out I cannot read this timetable"

"It's simple, give me a look"

He handed me his timetable. I showed the layout to him and explained where each of his classes were. He kept fiddling with his bag straps.

The bell rang.

"You ok then?"

He looked uneasy, looking down at his timetable. I gave him a reassuring smile.

Why was this kid so nervous?

He looked up at me up suddenly. His intense blue eyes startled me.

" Hazel, can I have your number? It could really come in handy"

I smiled taking his phone off him and putting in my number.

" Now go your gonna be late!"

I handed him back his phone.

"It's called a warning bell for a reason you know?"

"Yeah, yeah" he said smirking and rolling his eyes at me.

"See you at lunch" I said

" Looking forward to it already!" He yelled at me while I walked in the other direction.

I didn't have any classes with Hayes I was kinda disappointed.

I hadn't even seen my friends yet. I rushed into my first period only just making it.
