It was lunchtime before I remembered everything that happened with Hayes.
Crap I thought
I had slept in late and woke up to have lunch instead of breakfast.
I pulled out my phone and scrolled through all my notifications, there was nothing from Hayes.
I dialled his number, but it went to voicemail. I listened to his answering machine he sounded really happy in it.
Sorry I missed your call, ring me back later if you can
I rang again but the same thing happened. I felt like a creep listening to his voicemail and hung up.
I texted him twice hoping that he would reply.
'Hey we need to talk'
'I'm sorry I missed you last night'
I spent the afternoon checking my phone incase I got any text messages and making sure I wasn't missing any calls.
Nothing.
"Are you waiting for a call or something?" Jack asked slicing up a massive piece of watermelon in the kitchen.
"Kinda" I said wondering if I should tell him or not.
I told him anyway, I trusted my brother. For a guy he always gave me good advice.
I wasn't going to tell Anna or Zoe about it.
"Call over to him" Jack said simply and bit into a wedge of water melon squirting juice everywhere.
"God damn it" he muttered wiping the counter top with his sleeves.
"It's not that easy"
I really didn't want to arrive at his doorstep, uninvited, begging for forgiveness.
Jack seemed to know what I was thinking.
"Hazel just go, he's your best friend. You can't afford to fall out with someone like that"
Jack was right of course.
Hayes had been the best friend I ever had, helping me through difficult things my other friends wouldn't of managed.
This seemed to be enough to force myself out the door.
"Good girl" Jack called after me before I slammed the front door.
I realised I was still in my pyjama pants, oh well.
~
"Hey honey what's up?" Elizabeth answered the door smiling as always with Skylynn in her arms.
"Nothing much, just looking for Hayes. Is he here?"
Elizabeth frowned.
"No sorry he's just left for the beach, you could probably catch him if you hurry" she told me.
I thanked her and ran down the porch and outside her front gate and went straight home.
I quickly changed into my bikini and grabbed my surf board from the rack in the porch and took the pathway down towards the beach.
As soon as I reached the sand dunes, I scanned the water looking for his lime green board.
I couldn't see him anywhere, but I knew exactly where to find him.
~
Hayes POV
I saw her turquoise board jutting out from the rocks and then I saw her coming towards me.
"Hayes!"
How did she know I would be here?
I came out here wanting time alone, it's all that I wanted lately, all I ever felt was loneliness.
"Thought I might find you here"
She dragged her board into the cave and sat down beside me.
I sat in silence, looking out towards the sea.
"Hayes c'mon what's up" she said nudging my arm.
I turned around to face her my eyes filled with so many different emotions.
"Nothing" I muttered pulling away from her intense gaze.
"Hayes" she said sternly.
"I can't have my best friend annoyed at me"
I told her that I wasn't annoyed at her. I was annoyed at myself.
"Is this about ditching you last night, because I'm really sorry" she said.
"It's fine" I said shrugging, it would of been fine if it hadn't been Dylan she ditched me for.
"I know it was pretty awkward, you walking in on whatever with Dylan but you should of stayed!"
I looked at her angrily.
"Stay with Dylan? Did you honestly think I would do that?" I couldn't stop myself from saying it.
She looked confused.
" What about Dylan? He's really fun to hang out with"
I laughed coldly. Dylan was anything but fun, I was constantly deleting his horrible text messages that he sent me at every waking moment.
"Of course you would say that, he's perfectly nice to you, probably since ye were kissing"
I heard myself say, all my fury exploding out of me.
"Hayes don't try talking shit about someone you don't know" Hazel said angrily.
"What do you have against him?"
Everything I thought
"He mightn't be as amazing as you think he is, I'd be careful who your kissing" I said bitterly.
Hazel looked at me in outrage.
" And are you so amazing then? You don't know what your talking about! I don't need you telling me what to do"
She looked furious I stood up picking up my board and walked out of the cave.
"What the hell has gotten into you?" she snapped.
I ignored her continuing to walk into the water, I was already waist deep.
"Turn around and answer me!" she shouted furiously from the foot of the cave.
"Look at me!"
I spun around quickly facing her.
"It's you" I yelled angrily.
"Everything about you! I like you Hazel Johnson, I like you so much it hurts. I feel myself falling for you everyday. My heart beats faster every time I see you. But you would never notice it and you know what it fucking hurts to see you with him and knowing you'll never feel the same way! I yelled angrily.
"That's what's gotten into me Hazel, you"
I turned around swimming away at top speed on my board past the rocks towards the shore.
