Song- Mat Kearney~ Ships in the night

I had never seen rain as bad as that night. It fell heavily from the middle of the day, all the way through the night.

Looking out through the window all I could see were the transparent raindrops constantly splattering against the pane.

The thunder came first, followed closely by the lighting.

Storms always terrified me, I couldn't relax.

I got an unsettling feeling in the bottom of my stomach that didn't lift until the dark rain clouds did.

As a child I used to cry myself to sleep, while the storm raged outside my window.

Living by the sea always made a storm worse, windier, louder, wetter.

I was on edge for the whole day.

"There's no way any of ye can leave" Jack said looking outside worriedly.

Cameron and Nash had barely made it over here, they had been soaked to the skin.

I was disappointed that Hayes hadn't came with them.

I hadn't talked to him all day.

Carter, Shawn, Matt and Jack Gilinsky were still there unable to leave the house.

"Do you reckon people would deliver takeaway?" Carter asked.

"We can't even call them anyway" Jack said with annoyance.

I took out my phone checking the signal again.

It changed from no service to one bar every once and a while.

"We will literally end up playing board games" I groaned.

"Your all welcome to stay the night here" mom said coming into the lounge.

She looked worn out and tired with bags under her eyes.

I must of looked the exact same.

Like me she feared thunder storms and she jumped whenever she heard it.

We all helped her carrying in pillows, duvets and blankets and arranged them around the room so we could all sleep comfortably.

Carter and Matt curled up together on a couch, I shared with my brother leaving Nash and Cameron to share the small sofa and Jack G and Shawn spread out on the floor.

Matt kept squealing every time he heard the thunder and couldn't stay still.

"Matt I'm warning you stop moving!" Carter said holding Matt's squirming body down.

"Boys watch the movie" Cameron snapped throwing a cushion at Carter.

Mom came in with some snacks for us and we all began to relax enjoying the movie.

It was only a bit of rain, in the morning it would be bright and sunny and I would be going to down to the beach with Hayes, surfing in the waves.

Despite the constant whispering and cushion throwing I grew really tired.

I tried ringing Hayes again.

Straight to voicemail.

Why couldn't I get through to him? I thought.

I had been trying all day and I couldn't.

I guess I gave up and lay down beside Jack curling into his side.

I had gotten used to the rhythmic sound of the rain and became drowsy.

Jack stared to to run his fingers through my hair, which eventually lead me into a deep sleep.

~

"Hazel, Hazel there's someone knocking on the door" Jack said shaking me awake.

It was still dark outside, but the rain wasn't as heavy.

The other boys were still fast asleep, each boy was in a completely different sleeping position.

There were at least three loud snorers.

Wow.

"Hazel seriously! Let's go get it" Jack whispered urgently.

We got up off our our couch, tiptoeing out of the room, dodging the occasional leg or arm.

My fingers fumbled in the darkness trying to find the latch of the door.

Mom had came running down the stairs, she must of heard the knocking on the door as well.

I opened it to see a small figure on the doorstep.

Elizabeth was standing shivering on our porch, her face pale and tight with worry.

After while she managed to speak.

"It's Hayes. I can't find him, he's not at home, he left his phone. Please tell me he's here"

I could see her fighting back tears.

Our facial expressions seemed to say everything.

"I'm so sorry, no he's not" my mom whispered.

Elizabeth sat down on the floor her head in her hands.

Hayes had gone missing, I was terrified.

Realisation was starting to kick in.

"I'll go wake up Nash" Jack said running back into the room.

I could here my mom and Elizabeth talking with panic in their voices.

Trying to think of where he could be, at four in the morning.

She didn't know when or how he left.

My mom was asking endless questions that no one had the answers to, we were getting more and more desperate.

Elizabeth was crying, my mom comforting her.

She promised that we'd find him. I was used to empty promises.

Nash ran out his hair sticking out and his face full of worry.

"Hayes"

Was all he managed to say.

I could see him trying to hold himself together, Jack had a strong arm around him.

It broke my heart and I wanted to run away from the situation.

He was talking quickly to Elizabeth but I couldn't hear anything they were saying.

I was stood at the door, unable to move, or even talk.

Hayes was missing, he wasn't answering calls, texts.

Hayes was missing, my best friend I was supposed to look out for was gone.

I stood there thinking of everywhere he could be and everything he had last said to me.

I couldn't even think properly, I was panicking.

I looked over across the deck, it was still wet from the storm.

The rack was standing sturdily in its usual place.

But the lime green surfboard Hayes had left there,

Was gone.
