I took my surfboard off the rack in the porch where all our boards were kept.
It was a pretty turquoise colour.
On the way to the beach I got a text from Hayes.
"Hey, can I call over?"
I shivered imaging him meeting my dad.
Only Gilinsky knew the truth, we would tell everyone else our Dad's never home because of work.
No one had ever met him but Jack.
'No sorry, I'm gone surfing' I replied.
A few seconds later my phone started vibrating in my pocket. It was Hayes calling me.
"Surfing eh?" Hayes sounded like he had just woken up.
"Yeah I just needed to get out" I said loudly, it was pretty windy.
Perfect for surfing.
"I'll be down in five."
"No Hayes it's-"
He hung up before I could even finish.
I arrived at the beach sinking my toes into the sand, enjoying the fresh air.
I tied my hair back with a scrunchie, the wind was whipping it around like crazy.
I sat there stretching my legs out and squinting up at the sun.
~
"OI! HAZEL"
Hayes was shouting from across the street waving like crazy.
Wow this boy was unbelievable.
He was carrying a red and white board and wearing nothing but his swimming shorts.
He ran over collapsing into the sand next to me, awkwardly placing his surf board next to him.
"You never told me you could surf?" he said slapping me playfully.
He looked down clearly impressed with my board.
"You never told me you could surf either!" I answered, digging him gently.
I told him how I had surfed since I was really small when I used to live with my mom.
I was just lucky that when I moved here we were just down the road from the beach.
Hayes seemed really interested telling me how he loved to surf and that Nash had told him about the beach here.
"Yeah he was down here a few days ago with Jack and some of the guys!"
I said then looking down at Hayes shorts.
"I'm pretty sure he was wearing those shorts actually"
Hayes grinned at me
"Hey I basically wear everything Nash owns, it drives him crazy"
He sounded delighted with himself. He was such a funny guy.
We grabbed our boards and headed down to the waves.
It was time for me to see if this kid was any good.
~
He was good. Really good actually.
He had fast reflexes and great balance.
I was impressed, a lot of the guys around here surfed but not the way that Hayes did.
He was a natural and caught every wave that he tried.
With out even realising it I had spent almost half of my Saturday afternoon with him.
I showed him the cliffs out far, they were pretty dangerous if the tide was properly in and it was stormy.
The tide was out though and there wasn't much of a current so we swam out leaving our boards on the beach.
"I come here sometimes" I told him.
Hayes was climbing up the rocks and looking out at the view.
He took my hand helping me up after him.
"It's really peaceful here"
I showed him into the cave, you had to crawl across the rocks but we managed it.
It wasn't very big but it was sheltered with soft sand, protecting us from the sun. I hadn't brought many people there before. I didn't get to go there very often but when I did I wanted to be alone.
I was happy to share it with Hayes, he was great company.
"This is amazing" Hayes said in awe and he sat down in the sand.
I sat down beside him looking out at the water lapping in at the foot of the cave.
I was really happy just sitting there with Hayes, messing around with him.
His blue eyes glistened every time he laughed.
Grains of sand stuck on his long eyelashes.
His voice was so deep but when he laughed it went high like a little boys.
The more I hung out with him the more I noticed about him.
" Hey look a dolphin!" He yelled crawling out to the foot of the cave and standing up.
" Hazel come here! Look!"
I got up reluctantly following him out.
"I don't see it" I said frowning.
Then he caught my eye laughing and picked me up over his shoulder and ran back into the deep water.
I yelled at him hitting his back, but he had no mercy.
He threw me head first into the water throwing himself under aswell.
