"HAZEL! She's outside!" Jack yelled.
I raced from the kitchen, moving as fast as I could. My mom was only seconds away from me.
I had helped the Jacks prepare a welcome home dinner for her.
She had arrived early, I didn't feel ready yet.
I slipped past Jack G and found myself on the porch face to face with my mom.
I was speechless.
She looked the exact same as the day I said goodbye to her on the same porch a year ago.
I was crying tears of happiness, and she was crying holding me tightly in her arms.
I took in her familiar scent that I had missed so much.
"Mom" I managed to say and she hushed me soothingly.
"You should of told me" she said holding back her sobs.
"My poor babies" she pulled Jack in towards her and I felt him put an arm around my waist.
This was what it felt like, I thought. To have a parent again.
"He's gone, were going to be safe here" she said pulling away and looking at us smiling.
I knew she was right. Everything was going to be ok again, like old times.
"You've grown so much"
I was small and petite like her, only a little taller.
Jack Gilinsky had been observing from behind leaning up against the door frame.
My mom beckoned him over. He stood awkwardly his hands shoved in his pockets.
"Thank you so much Jack, for being there for my kids" she said firmly.
Jack looked down at her his eyes full of tears.
I had never seen him cry before.
"I knew the whole time" he said furiously.
"And I never did.. anything"
I watched my mom pull him into a hug he looked so big next to her. All six foot two of him towering over her.
"Jack! You supported my children and listened to them when they needed someone. I couldn't be more grateful for what you have done"
He nodded looking down at the floor, wiping away his tears quickly.
It was the sweetest thing I had ever seen.
"Now c'mon inside let's have some food my bags can wait, we have lots to catch up on!"
The four of us went into the kitchen and sat down for dinner, chatting and filling our mom in on everything.
I was so happy to have her back.
