"I lost everything. I cannot stand beside her as a respectable gentleman."
I couldn't help but roll my eyes at the boy's explanation. It was a bit petty, if I was going to be honest with myself. A noble boy, who just happened to be a bit unlucky. He has a wife who may or may not be pregnant, and now he worries that he cannot provide for them? Doesn't he see that he'd be harming them more if he were to leave them? It's infuriating!!
"I doubt your wife will be angry with you, Paul. I mean... let's be honest, she won't be pleased, but I doubt she wants you to kill yourself over this."
"Yes, but no matter what I try I just keep... losing!"
"Then stop gambling. Maybe go to church." I smirked at the girl's reasoning, but I kept my hands to myself as I watched the scene unfold. Human conversations can be so entertaining at times, and while I've heard the girl speaking for myself, something tells me she... knows way too much. Surely the reapers in her time would have dealt with her by now, wouldn't they? But she must be a target for any species, which makes me wonder how she's survived for this long, without a contract, without the influence of a divine source. Nothing. She's just so...
Intriguing.
"But –"
"Sinning does lead to more problems down the road, and while we all need a bit of fun once in a while, it becomes life threatening when you start to consume yourself by your addictions. Take some time away from the poker tables and bars and spend some time with your family. I'm sure your wife would be grateful if you did."
"W-well... I suppose so, but how can I tell her about this?"
"Just be honest, Paul. I'm sure she'll appreciate your honesty more then your lies, anyways. But~... maybe smooth it over by getting her flowers or something."
I couldn't help but chuckle at her comments. The way she throws a bit of jokes into such a serious conversation is so delightfully amusing! I couldn't help myself, but reach over my hand, crumbling my hand on top of her own as she gave me a curious look before turning back to the boy.
The conversation was dull and rather boring. Of course, I understand that my little rose is trying to be helpful, but the boy cannot get it through his thick skull! And I can tell he's trying her patience –
"Well, ah... thank you, Lady Rose. Though," the boy asked as his eyes turned to look at my hand, "pardon my rudeness, but... are you Mr. Undertaker's wife?"
"No. We're dating," she smirked, slumping her head onto her other hand as she grinned a bit too delightedly in his general direction. "Sorry, sweet cheeks, but I'm not interested in being a mistress of yours. Unless this fellow over here displeases me."
"Awww~. Now, I hope I haven't displeased~ you," I cooed with a grin, grasping her hand and placing the top upon my lips, grinning deviously as she rolled her eyes and shook her head, suppressing the snickering that almost left her throat.
But I froze midsentence as she planted a chaste kiss on my lips, my eyes widening from behind my bangs while she casually turned her attention back to the boy and stood to her feet. "Would you like to be escorted back home? I'm sure Undertaker can take you."
"A-ah. No! No, I'm fine," the boy blushed, and I'm sure he was blushing just as much as I was, but the devious little girl snickered in delight.
"Fine. I just hope to not see you back in the parlor anytime soon... unless you're a living guest, that is."
"I'll keep that in mind," the boy chuckled nervously as he stood to his feet, "a-and, ah... thank you. Both of you."
"Of course," the girl smiled, waving at the boy as he began to walk away, but before he got too far I kissed the side of the girl's cheek.
