Chapter 29: The Battle Tournaments (Part 4)

Magic is real.

It's a force created from fluctuation of emotion, unbounded by the First Law of Thermodynamic.

When Kyuubey's scientifically-advanced race discovered magic, they realized it's capacity to create new energy that can postpone maximum Entropy and delay the heat and the gruesome death of the universe.

However, Kyuubey's race is incapable of emotions, thus they scoured the universe for species with the most emotional potential.

He found his answer in Earth's human females even before the element of fire was discovered, especially those still developing secondary sex characteristics.

He forms a contract with the ones who have karmic potential and they become Magical Girls in exchange for their own wish coming true. Not long after, Witches emerged in the world and these girls fought them to get rid of their despair and bring hope to the world.

These are clearly the results of Kyuubey's quest to harvest this energy.

However, because of a technicality, Kyuubey had given a male human a contract and quickly discovered that human males, especially the ones still going through puberty, are capable of potential as equally as the girls do. That's how he started to make a contract with both genders, too.

While you might think that this is the best deal out there, there's a catch; the Soul Gems.

The Soul Gems are what is brought out after a human makes a contract. They're supposedly containers of their magic.

And their souls.

These gems get corrupted every time they use magic, and the magi would have to get Grief Seeds, which are the Soul Gem equivalent for the witches, to purify their gems.

If their gems get fully corrupted, the Soul Gem gets burned out and turned into a Grief Seed, consequently turning the owner into a witch. Majority of the magi were kept blissfully unaware of this horrid fact...

Then, in the end of the Pre-Quirk Era, he formed a contract with a girl named Madoka Kaname, a girl who was fully aware of the horrid secrets of the contract she was agreeing and is fully intent on ending it, once and for all.

As a result, her wish turned her into a goddess and gave birth to a new universe concept; The Law of The Cycles.

Every time a magi's soul gem would be fully corrupted, their soul would be taken and claimed by Madoka and her haven before they become a witch.

Because of this, witches doesn't exist anymore, and Madoka became an omnipotent being to maintain the balance of the rule she wrote.

Instead, all the magi would have to fight Wraiths to balance the effects and substitute the loss of Grief Seeds to delay Entropy. It was supposed to be happily ever after.

Emphasis on supposed.

However, in the middle of the reign of the Symbol of Peace, otherwise known as All Might, Madoka was suddenly blocked out from retrieving the corrupted magi, bringing back the witches' existence.

Unable to see why she couldn't save them or who was blocking her, she took 5 magi who was already in the Law of The Cycles with her.

This includes Sayaka Miki, Madoka's childhood friend who is a healing magi that loved music; Homura Akemi, a time-manipulative magi who is Madoka's best friend and right hand woman; Kyoko Sakura, a warrior magi who dealt the loss of her family; Nagisa Tomoe, a cheese-loving magi who can turn into a witch at her will and just wanted to be of help with them; and Mami Tomoe, a veteran magi who was recently just taken in.
