Accidents make perfection

Chapter 4

When I walk in I take my shoes and coat off at the door. Mom's been making a fuss about trailing mud into the new house, and made new rules so we can't wear our shoes in the house. When I walk out of the foyer and into the house I'm greeted by my mother making lunch for my dad and siblings, when she sees me she smiles and gestures for me to come help. I walk over and start to cut some lettuce " you're home early, I thought you where going to train with Ella and the others?" My mother asks while she cuts the bread "I had to cancel on them, Davidson wanted too talk to me" I say. I finish cutting the lettuce and then take the bread my mom cut and put it in the toaster "what did he want to talk to you about?" She asks while going into the fridge to grab some mustard "he told me he was leaving with Carmadon for a week to go and get their new daughter" my mother gasps and then smiles " oh how wonderful! He must be very excited, did you get her name?" My mother squeals in excitement I just laugh at her enthusiasm but my mother responds with "you'll understand when you have kids how exciting it is when your friends have kids" I just look at her and say "that's a long long time from now mom" she just rolls her eyes and says "wait so that's all he talked to you about, that's kind of silly, making you freak out about meeting him and him telling you that." She says " no he also told me that he was supposed to go to a meeting about the Lakelander war in Norta next week but because he can't attend so he asked if I would go in his place." I say. My mother just freezes. Everything is silent until the rest of my family walks through the door laughing, i assume they were outside doing yard work. When my father sees mom he goes serious "what's wrong Ruth?" He says and my siblings go quiet "your going back to Norta?" My mother says and my whole family looks at me. There's Silence for what feels like 10 years. The toaster goes off and I go and grab the bread. Gisa comes forward and puts her hand on mine stopping me from doing anything "why are you going back?" She asks.

I explain to my family and by now they're all sitting at the table listening to me explain why and who's coming with me. When I finish Bree asks me "how close are you going to be to the war?" I pause because I know they'll hate the answer "I'll be staying in Archeon but I'll be going to Corvium for a day or two" I say and my mother gasps, my father grabs her hand to sooth her but it doesn't do much. Then Bree asks "You're not going are you? You haven't said yes yet right?" I decide to answer honestly "no I haven't accepted yet, but I'm going to. I need to go back, if I don't go back now I'm might never be able to. I know it might be dangerous, but this is what I train for so it's not like I'll be rusty in the field. Besides I won't be really going into battle" They all go silent for a second before my father says "We understand" Bree try's to object but my father interjects before he can get the words out "you do understand that we just want you to be safe, and after everything that you went through..." " I know dad" I say with a knowing smile.

After we eat lunch I decide to call Davidson and let him know I will be going. During the phone call he tells me that I will have a briefing  tomorrow morning with Farley and that we will be leaving in 3 days.
