Accidents make perfection

Chapter 25

Ruth POV

When Cal showed up at our door Gisa and I were having a hard time keeping the boys back from him while Daniel spoke to him about what? I don't know. But afterwards he and I went out grocery shopping. I didn't ask about the conversation they had because Daniel looked angry. When we get back home and inside, I see Cal sleeping on the couch with Mare on top of him they have their hands intertwined on Mares stomach "that's nice" I say and take off my coat. "Why are they sleeping it's 2 in the afternoon?" Daniel asks and I click my tongue "Mare is pregnant, and Cal just got back from battle. Show them some sympathy." I say and he gives a small smile "yes of course sorry." Daniel says and kisses my head "thank you. Now let's start putting away these groceries and start dinner" I say when we're done putting everything away I start to prepare the turkey, and Daniel starts the stuffing "so what did you talk to Cal about earlier." I ask casually, Daniel sighs "I asked him what their plan was." He says "which is" I say "they plan on finding a house here in Montfort and moving in so that they're close to us and it's safer for their baby. Cal hasn't told Mare yet but until the baby comes he's going to be here for 2 weeks and in Norta for 2 weeks." He says and it sound like a good plan they really thought about this "and once the baby comes?" I ask "he hopes that the war will be over by that point. But if not, he'll stay for a month or two and then switch from one month here and two weeks gone" He says and I smile "well it sounds like they have it all worked out." I say "not everything, they're not getting married." He says and I can sense the anger boiling inside him "Daniel they don't have to get married, besides the only thing it does is show the country you're together and in a committed relationship." I say "I know, but it would make me feel better if I knew he would leave her again." He says, sadness peeking through the anger. I walk towards him and hug him from behind "he won't ok? He's not that kind of person anymore, he's changed for the better. And don't throw the 'but people don't change' crap, they do he's proof of that." I say and kiss his cheek, he smiles a bit "I guess you're right" he says. I like Cal he's nice and polite and it's funny how an ex prince is scared of our family. As long as he doesn't let Mare down he's fine in my book.

Mare POV

After our conversation Cal an I fell asleep, I wake up to Bree poking my face "wha.. what are you doing?" I ask "it's almost dinner, so get your baby daddy up." He says "please don't call me that." Cal says and I laugh. I get up off of Cal and we both make our way to the dining room. Cal sits next to my dad who always sits at the end, and next me. Gisa, Trammy and Bree bring out all the food and my mother brings out the water. I can tell Cal is stressed, he's so tense so I put my hand on his thigh "relax they won't bite" I say and he laughs a little. Bree and Trammy try and go for some food but my mom slaps them away "we have a guest, table manners please" she says "ya Bree" Trammy says and Bree looks at him offended "you went for the food too" he says "did not" Trammy says. Before it escalated further my father cleared his throat and my brothers immediately stop. We serve the food passing it all around "so Tiberias, how's the war going?" Bree asks "Bree." I say because Cal hates being called by that name. But cal gives a small laugh "it's going well actually, we've gotten a lot further into the Lakeland's and we're hoping that we can end it in a few months." He says and my brothers and father nod in approval. The rest of the dinner we talk and laugh and have a great time, on the occasion my brothers will make fun of Cal by calling him your majesty when they pass him something, or they'll ask him really personal questions. When dinner is finished me and Gisa help mom in the kitchen while the rest of the guys talk about the war, I don't join because my father and I tend to get into arguments about it. But cal seams to hold himself and my father agrees with a lot of the things that he says. Once everything is all cleaned up I get a call from Farley, I pick it up and immediately pull the phone away from my ear, Clara is yelling into the phone, I hear Farley say 'stop it, or you won't get dessert' she then grabs the phone "hello Mare" she says "well someone is being strict." I say and she huffs "I need a favour" she says fast and straight to the point "sure what is it?" I ask "could you watch Clara for me while I'm gone to a meeting?" She asks "ya sure, but Cal's here so is it alright if he comes?" I ask "sure sure, can you be here in 5?" She says "ya sure see you then" I say and hang up the phone "Cal we're leaving!" I yell and my dad looks at me with his head tilted "Farley asked if we could watch Clara while she's at a meeting." I say responding to his confused look "oh ok." Cal says and I kiss my parents goodbye. I get into Cal's car and I direct him to her apartment. When we get there I hear crying coming from her door "oh boy" I say, but Cal looks strangely relaxed. I knock on the door but before I finish Farley opens it  "thank god you're here i'm almost late" she says and hands me Clara "she doesn't need to eat, but she might get a little hungry so there's carrots in the fridge for her. And you know what to do for the rest." She says "no mommy stay." Clara says and pouts "Clara I'll be back in a few hours in the mean time you'll be with aunt Mare and Uncle Cal ok?" Farley says, when she says uncle cal it makes him stiffen a bit  Clara looks at him and then back at Farley "I've got to go, I'll see you later bug ok?" She says and kisses her on the head. She leave and I look at Clara who has her arms crossed in protest "ok Clara we have 3 hours until you have to go to bed so what do you want to do?" I ask. She just looks at Cal and reaches for him, so I give her to him, I have to show him how to hold a child but other then that he's a natural. She scans him and touches his face "you look like uncle Bree" she says and I laugh, Cal smiles "yes but there's a big difference between us" he says "what?" She asks "because Bree wasn't a prince." He says and her eyes go wide "you are a prince" she says star struck "yes but I'm not anymore." He says "why?" She asks "because, they wouldn't let me marry aunt Mare." He says, obviously it's not the whole truth there where a bunch of other reasons, but I never thought of it like that. He gave it all up for me. I look up from the floor where I was cleaning some toys up and smile at what he says "you love her." She says and Cal smiles "yes I do,  but do you wanna know who else I love?" He says "who?" She says and smiles, Cal boops her nose "you" he says and she giggles. We play with her until she falls asleep in my arms and I take her to bed, when I get back I see cal cleaning up the kitchen "how are you so good with kids?" I ask and he smiles "they tend to like the heat I give off." He says " but you weren't too bad yourself" he continues, I laugh " not when she was an infant" I say "but Farley's gonna kill you" I say and he perks up like a meerkat "what? Why?" He asks "because now she loves monarchies" I say and his eyes go wide "fuck" he says and I laugh "don't worry you can tell her that's it's not all that great when we watch her tomorrow" I say "wait we're watching her tomorrow?" He asks and I nod "ya Farley texted me and said that they have to continue the meeting tomorrow . After about one more hour Farley finally comes home we tell her what happened and say goodbye we go back to my house and sleep in my room it's nice and warm with him next to me " so tomorrow do you want to check out the house?" I ask "absolutely" he says and we fall sleep right away.

When I wake up Cal is sitting on the side of the bed all dressed and rubbing my leg to wake me up, unlike my brothers who usually rip the blankets off my bed and tell wake 'up dumbass'. I turn to look at him and smile "good morning" I say and stretch out, Cal laughs "well good afternoon to you to" he says "what?" I say why did he say good afternoon "it's almost 1pm Mare" he says and I jolt up "why did you let me sleep so long!?" I say and he puts up his hands "you just looked so peaceful and you were really tired from babysitting Clara I thought you'd want to sleep in." He says and I relax a bit "for me sleeping in is waking up at 10 am not 1 pm." I say "well we need to head over to the house so we can get to Farley's in time." He says, I sit up but my joints are aching so much I groan in pain "woah, woah, you ok?" Cal asks and I nod "ya it's just when you're pregnant your joint tend to hurt a lot, but for me they either hurt a lot or not at all. But I'll be fine after my shower." I say and he relaxes a little "ok well I'll meet you downstairs." He says and leaves. I text my friend who's a realtor to meet us at the house at around 1:30pm, I head to take a shower but every step feels like I'm going to break something. Once I get in the shower though the warm water washes away the pain and aching. I get out of the shower and brush my hair, I look through my wardrobe and try and find something to wear. I settle on one of the new outfits I bought, a mustard yellow checkered shirt that stops at my bump, and black leggings with the same yellow flowers on them that go up to where the shirt ends and yellow work boots. I grab my sweater and head out my room and downstairs. Gisa is usually at work and my brothers are usually out with their new girlfriends that they get every week. I see my father on the couch reading the paper but I hear my mother laugh in the kitchen, when I walk in Cal and my mother are sitting at the breakfast bar laughing and talking they both see me and Cal gives a huge smile "hey, you ready to go?" I ask and he gets up "yes I am." He says and turns and hugs my mom "it was nice talking to you Ruth." He says and my mother smiles "it was nice talking to you too Cal" my mother says. They finish hugging and I say goodbye to my mother with a kiss on the cheek.

Cal POV

As we're making our way out the door mare stops "shit I almost forgot, I'll be right back" she says and runs back into the house. She comes back out and it doesn't look like she grabbed anything "what did you forget" I ask and we get in the car "I forgot to take my vitamins" she says. I don't really know what that means but I think she has to take them for the baby. Mare gives me the directions to the house and it's not to far away from her parents house. When we pull up I'm in aw by this house it's so beautiful.
