Chapter 5

CAL POV

When I get back to the officer barrack's I flop onto my bed in exhaustion. When the war ended and I gave up my crown, I decide to try and help with the restoration of the city's that were destroyed. But after 5 months I was approached by Julian who asked me to help with the military effort against the Lakeland's. When I first was approached about the subject I wasn't too convince I should, but after a week of my uncle talking to me about it I thought it wouldn't hurt. And here I am 3 months later, second in command of the Nortan military and our strongest fighter. I've been training the men and women who volunteered for the war and it's been exhausting but I do get small vacations, well I wouldn't call them vacations more like meetings with the new government and Montfort in Archeon. I hate going to them, not only because they are boring, but because whenever I go back all I can think about is Mare. It's been 8 months since I last spoke to her, I miss her so much. Julian gives me updates on her when he comes back from diplomatic trips to Montfort. Julian is the silver representative for Norta and travels there a lot. He never sees Mare only gets his information from Davidson or Carmadon and on the rare occasion Farley. As I'm lying in my bed I hear a knock on my door, I grown in frustration and get up to answer it. When i get to the door I compose myself and open the door. I'm greeted by a soldier " commander Calore, this message came in for you from Archeon, regarding the meeting tomorrow " shit I forgot about that "thank you" I say and grab the note the soldier salutes to me and I salute back and he leaves. When I look at the message it has no confidentiality stamps on it so it must not be that important, I read it anyways

Commander Calore,

There has been a slight change regarding the meeting on September 13th discussing war strategy for the Lakelander war effort. Premier Davidson will not be able to attend the meeting due to a family matter, in his place Cpt. Barrow and Evangeline Samos will be attending.

What? Cpt Barrow? "WAIT! MARE IS COMING TO NORTA!" I yell, I re-read the letter again, Cpt Barrow yep that's her. I don't believe it, after all this time she's coming back. I can't help but smile, but as soon as the smile comes it leaves. What if she doesn't want to be with me anymore, what if she didn't wait. I start to feel sick of the thought. But she said she would wait and she kept the earring, I wonder if she put it on? As I'm thinking these things, someone knocks on my door again I go to open it and see Ada standing there "Hey Ada what's up" I say and gesture for her to come in. She walks in immediately and it looks like she's going to tell me something but stops to asks me a question "You ok Cal?" "What?" I say she looks closer and says "You look like you're going to faint" I look in the mirror and my face has lost it's silver hues "Damn, I just read the update on the meeting in Archeon" she than remembers what was on the update " Oh ya Mare's coming" the mention of her name sends butterflies trough my stomach "well that's actually what I wanted to talk to you about, the transport will come and pick you up at 05:00 tomorrow...Cal you sure you're ok, I know it's been a while but this is not the reaction I'd expect from someone who's about to see the woman they love for the first time in 8 months?" At this point I'm leaning on the vanity in the bathroom " what if she doesn't want me anymore, what if she can't forgive me for what I did?" Ada just looks at me with sympathetic eyes and comes closer wetting a cloth and wiping my face "You love her right?" I nod in response taking the wet cloth from her "take it from me, I could see the love she has for, it's not something you just forget after 8 months, she didn't ask you to wait because she needed time she asked you to wait because she thought you needed time." I look at her " What would I need time for?" I say She just sighs and says "I... well she killed your brother, Cal she thought you hated her for doing it" what? She thought I hated her for killing the monster who tortured her for 6 months "That wasn't Maven." I say  "Cal, I know and so does she that there was a part of you that wanted to try and bring him back, a part of you that still loved him, and her killing him ended all hope of that happening." At this point it's getting hard to hold back the tears that are burning my eyes "Anyways, Kilorn told me today during our lesson that Mare was looking forward to seeing you. So there's nothing to worry about I'll see you later." And with that she's gone. Once I know she far away I let the tears fall freely from my eyes, I'm not mad at her quite the opposite I love her, I loved my brother too, but he was long gone when Mare killed him.
